IGN has the scoop. Anyone interested?

Quote:
"Electronic Arts is poised to officially announce tomorrow that 3 on 3 NHL Arcade, an all-new downloadable hockey experience, is currently under development at EA Canada by the same team that produced NHL 09 and will be available on Xbox LIVE and the Playstation Network in February of 2009. 3 on 3 NHL Arcade promises to provide a lightning-paced, no rules hockey experience that gamers of all ages and ability levels can enjoy, and will be priced at 800 MS Points and $9.99 respectively.

With no rules to hinder the action, 3 on 3 NHL Arcade will allow gamers to enjoy the sport without the having to worry about adhering to icing, checking and other cumbersome regulations. And, the all-new physics engine that was introduced in NHL 09 is back, but with one small adjustment – now each hit is specifically designed to be absolutely huge. Now gamers will be able to hit the opposition with such bone-crushing checks that his victim will literally be blasted clear over the boards and off the rink."

I like it. I love NHL 09, and this may be a nice "pick up and play" game to throw on once in a while.

Only $10, hockey, sound pretty good.

I don't follow hockey, but for 10, it seems like a winner. We'll see.

Could be fun. Avatar support would be cool.

So they discontinued NBA Street in favor of NHL Street? Is there really a bigger market for arcade hockey?

I dont think anything is going to touch Wayne Gretzky's 3D hockey on the N64 though...

anybody remember Midway's 2 on 2 Open Ice (actual) Arcade game? If this is anything like that, it could be real good. Basically a solid NBA Jam-Hockey Game

I'll get this for sure! NHL Hitz was always a crowd pleaser...and it even had a playoff mode...

I don't really like the giant heads on all the time, wonder if that'll be an option? This has huge potential, but could easily flop. But if it's Hitz with the 09 Skill Stick, then count me in!

As i said in another thread, until EA can implement the real NHL rules then it still will be an arcade style game not sim.

You just have to see the amount of uncalled interferences, some is tolerable but its just ridiculous as it is now. Faceoffs on PP's dont automatically go in the opponents zone which they should.

Hell yea!!! Me and my buddy play NHL Hitz 03 and this would be awesome

Good. Now they can keep the arcade game and the sim game seperate. No need to mix the two if they are separate games.

Sounds lame as crap. The only good thing about this release would be the migration of arcade style hockey gamers from OTP EASHL NHL 09 to Arcade.

I was starting to think this might be a good idea (despite my my utter disgust) because, I was hoping this would lead to a more realistic game in the future. That being, the arcade style players would have a game to themselves and EA could "get real" about the series. But now I'm starting to think if this becomes too popular, it could be the direction EA wants to go.

A full priced arcade sports title on a next gen platform doesn't seem likely to be a big hit -- that's why the 3on3 game is an XBLA title. I don't think EA is going to get away from sim and your first scenario (an arcade game allows the yearly NHL series to go more sim) seems more probable.
