Backbreaker News Post

IGN has posted their preview of Backbreaker.

Quote:
"The altered control style isn't the only way that Backbreaker plans to separate itself from the pack. Rather than gunning for the simulation crown that Madden currently holds, NaturalMotion is going for arcade gameplay that has the most realistic motion ever seen in a videogame. You'll see things like defenders taking off from three yards away to lay the smack down on an unsuspecting quarterback and airborne receivers getting flipped end over end when trying to make a catch. It's nowhere near as ridiculous as Midway's Blitz but it does cash in on the same freedoms that come with the lack of the NFL license."

The player interaction looks AMAZING.

I don't care where this gets utilized... THIS will bring my excitement back for football gaming.

They even went as far as to animate the player's pads. Wow.

Exactly. People want this game to be good so badly, they're not being anywhere near objective about it. Nobody's even pointing out the fact that 90% of the teaser trailers we're getting are in slow motion, and they show things like guys running in the open field, or (apparently) offensive linemen catching footballs. Kinda hard to get an idea of the pacing and fluidity of this supposed engine with so little information.

And I'm sorry, but what they have shown is very similar to NFL Blitz. Right down to the total lack of textures, bland last-gen graphics, and over the top arcade-like plays (based more on the reviewer's descriptions than any actual footage, of course).

And now this game is a TBA 2009 release? That basically means June or later, since I'd highly doubt they'd release a football game in the middle of the offseason. This game is slowly becoming the "Too Human" of sports video games.

I am CONFIDENT this game will be out in 08, and I'm glad to see such good info since everyone still thinks its never going to come out.
I could care less when it comes, they should delay it until they think it's ready. The last thing I want to see is a rushed game, which I doubt it going to happen since they've already spent a lot of time on it why half *** it now.

It is going to be a sim game
Mixed messages anyone?
If theyre this Indecisive about their own product, I can only imagine what the final game will be like.

Another preview, this time from Gamespot

Nothing new, except it is slated for a 2008 release.

I'll wait for the reviews on this one, the physics sound cool but the graphics and lack of info on features make me want to wait until reviews pop up (though it does sound like one of those games the IGN/GS will give high scores because it's different from Madden and innovative, even if it is feature-light)

So when are they going to actually give us some useful information about this game?

Maybe they are waiting for the Madden hype to die down completely?

Lol. Big D. I feel your pain. It looks like the same people here are from the BB forum from their aracde/sim comments.

Looks like you're from those forums. I stopped going there a long time ago because most of the people that post there are total idiots.

That's a good way to get everyone to respect you here: Call them idiots.

If you put something in quotation marks you should probably make sure it was actually said first.

I'm kind of having a hard time understanding how people are saying they don't like the fact that the word arcade is being associated with this game as opposed to the word sim.

The companies who make Madden, NFL 2K, NBA 2K, MLB 08, etc. All use animations captured by grown men in full body suits mimicking movements from the respective sports, and thos limited number of animations are applied to the game. And the algorithms used in the game tries to determine what animation to trigger in every situation.

Backbreaker...model of a human body with working joints and the human motor nervous system; governed by a pretty much proven engine that emulates the physics of real life.

By definition the game is already a sim.

Not quite. By definition, the physics will be more sim than anything we've seen before. That says nothing about the actual football. A lot of guys read about real physics and assume that since physics are a bigger part of football than perhaps any other sport then a game with real physics has to be a great football game. That is just totally ignoring the AI which is just as important, if not more than the physics. That's the part people are questioning since this is the company's first football game.

this is the crie du coeur. It's (madden) badly broken to me, and to others. I don't enjoy madden in the least, and i've tried hard to. So what your saying is, to compete or to put out a product that will satisfy people like me, is to make a game that uses the exact same assumptions and mechanics from a game that I don't even like?

I WANT A NEW GAME!!! so do many others...

so why fight it? why put down or argue with a game that's different? Whether it comes out or not, if it's good or not, I don't get the dissent. I don't get why people need to chime in with reasons why it will fail. Why not just let it be what it is, and let people who are looking forward to it discuss it?

To anyone who says: 'this is vaporware' 'they haven't shown us anything' 'this is a tech demo' 'this will suck' or 'they won't get the AI right' ---- what the hell is your motivation man?

I know i don't waste my time talking about things i don't give a **** about all day, so I guess i don't understand why another human would do that ****.

It seems to me there are some people here who actually want this game to be a failure or not come out at all. Why don't you ask yourselves why the hell you feel that way and share it with the rest of us? If you can't do that, then why not just shut it...

Having a realistic physics engine does not equal a sim football game.

Why does another person's opinion of whether the game is coming out or not make you so angry?

I don't get caught up in all the hoopla. People take little shots at the game, then disappear for another two months. Arcade, sim... people don't know what the heck they're talking about half the time. Labeling the game after seeing 5 mins. worth of video? C'mon.

FACT: Given what we've seen, the tackling engine is more realistic than any other game out there, including 2k5 and any Madden ever.

That alone has me excited. If they can flesh out the rest of the game, as long as this isn't some over the top, ridiculous arcade game I'll certainly give it a look.

No, but I'll you what, Madden has no Crown of Simness in any video game realm that I acknowledge. That ship seems to have sailed.

I'm still cautiously optimistic about this one. The little teasers we've seen make me drool a bit but who knows how anything like this comes together. I just want some decent football. =\

# 39 stiffarmleft @ 08/25/08 11:34 AM
This game is a glimpse of the future, with the amount of high profile games using this technology, canned animations are a thing of the past. This technology offer substance over flash, something missing in most new games, especially sports.

# 40 nuckles2k2 @ 08/25/08 07:21 PM
I guess that AI statement makes sense. It would be an arcade game if they had "gamebreaker" type situations. But with the realism this company is obviously shooting for I just can't see them doing that.

This isn't the type of engine you apply to a football game and take little cheap shots at Madden to make another Blitz game. That would be a tremendous waste of money on their part.

Just my 2 cents.
