Madden 09 News Post

We have posted what is the most comprehensive and in-depth review you will find on Madden NFL 09, written by OS veteran Terry Crouch. Check out his thoughts on the game and be sure to add your own by reading the Madden NFL 09 Review!

Quote:
"In terms of sports game sales in the United States, there is Madden, and then there is everything else. Every year a new version is released, and routinely it outsells practically everything else sports wise in America. Every year people debate the quality of Madden on Internet forums and around water coolers across the country. Madden is more than a game to many people, and the frenzied mobs that either condemn or curse the game annually are evidence to this. So when you’re asked to review Madden for Operation Sports, you can be assured of two things: that you’ll be told you are the biggest idiot on the planet for your opinion, and that Madden is "arcade" while NFL 2K is/was 'sim'."

The Bug & Glitch thread did it for me... I will still hold out hope that the patch(es) will correct most issues and make this game into the great one it could be -

Nice honest review. I guess I will have to make my decision tomorrow as I drive by the best buy.

It's a fair assessment. Terry liked the game more than I did, but overall he's spot on in most areas. I feel the AI running out of bounds is a much bigger deal than he makes it out to be, as well as lack of AI sliders. The Madden IQ and My Skill is gimicky and doesn't work nearly as well as EA wants you to think it does.

7.5 if I'm giving scores.

Stellar review. I learned more about the game than I did through the 140+ pages on the impressions thread. Can't wait to get my hands on this bad boy...

One thing that had me nodding my head in delight is hearing about how simmed stats are more in line with Human stats. I can live with numbers that don't completely resemble real-life as long as they're in line with my virtual league. I hope the days are gone where my team would lead the league in INT's and Rushing Yards Against no matter which team I was using. It pretty much made it pointless to check the league leaders screens.

A fair and thorough review, IMO.

I knew the My Skill thing would be a gimmick after the demo. Much of it is like a Wii mini-game. The reviewer pointed out the running "test." I nearly bit on the CE to get Head Coach, but I'm glad I waited. I'll wait until the new release hoopla dies down before I make a determination on Madden. I swore after last year I would never buy another Madden game on release day ever again, and it seems a lot of what I hated about it still remains, namely a crappy franchise and lingering AI issues. I don't feel it necessary to get Madden as much this year after all the great things I've been reading about Head Coach.

Don't you get tired of saying this about nearly every game EA puts out? I'm not talking about this poster in particular, but this is a recurring theme with EA games. How long will people continue to buy games that require a patch...a patch which usually comes out way after people stopped caring by the way.

Not a bad review IMHO, I still disagree with some things. As for patches, you need them. It's always a good thing to have patches because if there's bugs or something went wrong they can fix it with a patch. Imagine back in the days when there weren't patches. Oh no, you just spent money on a game that can NEVER be fixed until next year.

Good for patches my friend, good for patches.

great read

well executed and covered nearly every aspect from a POV that most should be able to appreciate.

thanks

Terrible point of view, IMO. Because companies now have the ability to patch, they are more apt to release games with clear flaws in them because they would rather meet a deadline than release a quality game. I like they ability to patch, but it's become clear that developers rely on them rather than use them as a last resort. Madden is the perfect example of this..a patch was being planned as soon as the game went gold.

One of the better concise reviews. Pretty detailed and full of content. Covered most aspects of the game. Didn't show any real bias.

8.5 is serviceable for madden 09.

very nice review

Yea your right, patches suck. I'd rather get the game on time with no bugs. Of course no game is perfect so that means if there is a major bug or glitch, better luck next year ya?

Sorry friend, patches are the future for console games. Learn to live with it and accept it.

I would rather they could patch the game than not at all. Think about 2k5 if it could of had patches.

I wasn't expecting much from the Online Leagues anyway, but it should still be a good online experience.

That was a long read but I appreciate it.

Your assumption is off. You're making the assumption that if not for the ability to patch, then the release would be pushed back. That's incorrect. The reason the game comes out the way it does is in part with how EA structures itself, who gets priority, marketing, development time, league restrictions, etcetera. The only difference between the ability to patch the game and not is the fact a patchable product can get things fixed. There will always be bugs that get through, features not implemented, things people want changed.

That doesn't mean I don't understand where you're coming from, nor does it mean I agree with how EA and similiar companies decide to market and product their wares, it just means you're basing your assumption on very little besides motive, seemingly unaware of how the business is ran.
