Madden 09 News Post

Pasta Padre has posted his hands-on Madden NFL 09 impressions.

Quote:
"The pass defense does a great job defending the deep ball, and more so specifically the “jump” catches. Those spectacular catches from last year and the ones where a receiver sets and jumps straight up are usually negated by the defensive back swatting the ball, picking it off, or jarring the ball loose with a hit. The DB’s get high into the air to make plays and keep good position. Despite that I was able to complete a couple deep balls over the top when the receiver had a step or two advantage. It felt very fair when a deep pass was completed and I didn’t feel cheated one way or the other. Something neat is you’ll see the QB really get into a deep throw, lean back and throw it up higher than we have been used to. Looks much more natural in getting the power behind it and requires the QB have the time to do it."

Reviews pretty much went along with that, something I wouldn't cite to backup an argument but again short time with the game = people were satisfied. And in general most people liked, but probably didn't love 08. When it came to online play though that is where the game really crumbled.

Also consider when I was playing it, the game was already in the hands of many people who had found it early. I suspect the initial impressions would've been along the same lines. You have to keep in perspective that it was being compared to Madden 07 and it was obviously much better than that, and in some ways better than NCAA (like the gang tackling I cited).

The biggest difference this year is that I never once got frustrated with the game. I can't say that has ever been the case at a community event prior to this one. That is what has me excited the most as I spent more time with the game but never got frustrated with any aspect of it.

I would say that the Pasta's 08 impressions were pretty dead on for me. I mean he talked about the fumbles, the kicking, and interceptions. How was he to know that those would be gamekillers after playing for 4 hours. Other than that and the OL/DL it was pretty solid. I myself quit playing the game because of 2 reasons, turnovers, and the inability to throw over the defense. With those issues fixed this year, better control, graphics and presentation. I suspect I will be pretty happy come August 12th.

I know you mentioned a couple frustrations you had with the game. i have your fumbles included in your quote. However, your overall assessment was very positive saying it may be the best sports next gen sports game to date.

That's was your opinion so it can't be wrong I'm just not going be as easily convinced as I was last-year because from reading your 08 impressions the game sounded great! It only took a couple hours with the game to realize how bad it was. I went back to the last gen games and had a lot more fun.

Fair enough. I'm not trying to convince you on anything. If you want to take out the opinionated stuff I add in and just take the factual aspects instead I don't feel there is anything wrong with that. I'm not trying to sell the game to you. But I do feel very confident about my thoughts on it right now.

The reason I ask is because I'm curious if you've ever seen the cpu QB attempt to throw deep passes on you at all. Like, even once or twice. That's my one "obsession" right now, and I'm interested to see what you guys saw in this regard.
I'm probably not the best person to answer that, I didn't have an extensive amount of time against the CPU. But I remember a few intermediate passes at least, which seemed to stretch farther than I remember them throwing last year. I can't recall any really deep throws though.

Pasta - thansk for the write up. One question, is the Faulk pre and post game stuff still in? And the stupid ringbuilder?

I hated last year when you would finish a franchise game and Faulk would tell you that 'no trophies at stake, just about a W' - seeming to minimalize the importance of a regular season game over the placing of made up trophies on the line - against the CPU (yes I realize that there are many, many more important things in the world - obviously this is relatively speaking) .

I don't remember Faulk being in at all. Madden does an intro into the game as well as the exit out. Don't know if that applies the same way in franchise though.

Thanks Pasta - did you notice the ringbuilder thing?

I didn't mind the ring per say, just like you say, all the yapping about it before and after each game...that got old.

Were you this confident last year? I do remember you loving '08 just as much.
