Why Is EA Forgetting NCAA Football?
Posted on November 29, 2009 at 10:05 PM.
EA Sports has been highly criticized for a slow start in this “next-gen” era. Recently though, EA has been working to make higher quality games, and they are having success. With strong showings with Madden 10, arguably the best Madden ever, and NBA Live 10, EA’s first b-ball game this generation that can compete with the 2k series. But EA’s NCAA Football series seems to be moving in the wrong direction. NCAA Football 10 is the only EA Sports game this year that did not improve over last year, so why is EA forgetting NCAA Football?
College football is one of the most unique sporting seasons of the year. With the controversial BCS system, constant Heisman talk, and bitter rivalries, college football is always in the news. In April 2005, EA Sports signed a big exclusive deal with the NCAA to be the only company that produces college football games. Are there any more reasons as to why EA doesn’t focus on making a big-time college football video game?
NCAA Football 09 was a solid game, with improvements all around; it almost competed with its big brother, the Madden series. There were some gameplay flaws that held it back from being a great title. So there was a lot of hype surrounding NCAA Football 10. The game did not live up to the hype at all. It seems as if the developers looked over the core gameplay flaws and added gimmicks and new game modes thinking that gamers would be satisfied. That was the route the Madden team took in the beginning of the “next gen” era and it didn’t work out too well. NCAA Football 10 did not “feel” like a college football game, it felt like Madden with college logos and teams. There was none of that excitement or energy that made you feel like you’re actually there on Saturday.
The NCAA Football series could easily be saved with the right thinking and attitude. Look at what the other EA games are doing that is so successful. Take Madden’s “everything you see on Sunday” motto; that is exactly what developers need to think while making games and it will lead to success (Madden 10). With a good solid gameplay base and the unique feel of college football, NCAA Football 11 could be the beginning of something great. It just needs a little attention
