The current advantage that the Lakers is the front court size. This is great for a coach that emphasizes defense and a slow paced offense. Rebounding and length in the paint to deter opponents from getting to the basket.
Even considering this the front office chose to go with a coach that preaches up-tempo basketball. Does the current roster have the pieces to execute Mike D'Antoni's style of play?
The players that can fit in his system that you should keep when in your association are- Kobe, Nash, Howard, Meeks, Jamison, Duhon, Hill, Blake. These are fully capable of creating the spacing with either shooting or speed to making the offense work.
Trading Gasol for a stretch 4 and Peace for an athletic wing player would be the best bets to upgrading your team. You might have to surrender some picks to make it work. But in the long run it will benefit you salary cap as well as your offense.
