I've been playing 2K games since 2005 (Big Ben on the cover). I've watched it grow and evolve over the years - some years better than others, but more or less a steady increase in features and playability.
This year the game is, to me, without question the greatest release in the history of 2K games. It amazing as you play and watch the game how connected the players are. None of this random looping, or mindless wandering about the court. Everyplayer is focused on the action and reacts appropriately. Turning their heads to catch a glimpse of an opponent cutting back door or changin' facial expression to indicate the effort of the moment. Don't get me wrong, every now and then you get a "what was that" moment, but for the most part this game is tight.
The developers have been listening and they are tweeking this thing and making it better every year. Thousands of unique animations that draw you in to the game and add to the illusion of REAL basketball. At times I find myself laughing when something plays out so life like... DWade pulling his jersey apart - a la Cam Newton - to symbolically reveal HE IS Superman... Melo winking as he completes an "And1" taking some hapless defender to school. And the DUNKS... OMG! Personally, I've numbed down the vertical and a few other attributes because I want it to look like something real and not NBA JAM, but to each his own.
2K has spoiled us true gamers in that we are reduced to nitpicking about inconsequentials such as an occasional slide or a player morphing through the backboard. They have set the bar very high and we in response have added to the fantasy, demanding perfection which is equally as unattainable in a video game as it is in life.
Sure, there are things that can be better, usually personal preference things which - while seeming to be nonsensical to others - are of paramount importance to us.
My hats off to 2K as they have succeeded in making a game which appeals to ballers across the gamut; from the Simhead to the NBA-Jammer; from the "reproduce the stats" freak to the "I wanna score 100 with Kobe". I don't care where you sit along the spectrum of ballers, one thing you'll eventually admit is: THIS GAME IS FUN!
