Some guys I don't know wrote this.

I'm just gonna do some comparisons (with emphasis on the offensive side) so that people can translate a current player's style to one of the older players (not necessarily trying to start any debate over who's better). Here's my take on the 89 Pistons:

Isiah Thomas: Chris Paul with a shakier outside shot
Joe Dumars: Mix between Ben Gordon and Chauncey Billups. Can score in a lot of ways like Gordon, but physical and smart like Chauncey. You want him guarding the other team's best perimeter guy
Mark Aguirre: poor man's Paul Pierce
Bill Laimbeer: Prime Brad Miller
Rick Mahorn: Reggie Evans; not exactly a beast on defense, but if there are hard fouls in the game, you can use him to rough up the other team's best big man. Good rebounder too

Vinnie Johnson: Jason Terry without three point range. Small guy who can give you instant offense off the bench and be the best player on the floor in spurts
Dennis Rodman: Anderson Varejao. Really active on both ends of the floor. Best defensive player on the team. On offense, you probably only want to use him for garbage buckets
James Edwards: Carl Landry. Decent scorer inside. Kinda weak on the boards.
John Salley: Amir Johnson. Nice energy and length. You probably dont want him touching the ball much unless it's an easy bucket.
Darryl Dawkins: Current Joe Smith. He was pretty much a nonfactor by this point. Just a big body.[/quote]

A little more
Isiah Thomas:If there was a Hall of Fame for Clutch shooters Zeke would be in the top five. Most people don't know this but a very good offensive rebouder for his size.
Joe Dumars: If Joe was in the league today he would be a point guard. He ws a very good shooter but what really drove his shooting percentage up was his shot selection. Never took a bad shot. Strong but not athletic. I doubt he had 2 dunks that year theat weren't break aways.
Mark Aguirre: Played much more in the post that Pierce. Huge hands. Very smart player. At this point in his career he could easily score 25 every night but sacrificed his game for the team.
Rick Mahorn: Started but was usually the first sub out. Had back trouble alot that season that limited his production. This was Mahorn's last year with the team. He was selected by the Twolves in the expansion draft but refused to play with them and forced the trade to Barkley's Sixers. Isiah was vocal that the after Mahorn left that the team was no longer o be called the Bad Boys out of respect for what mahorn brought to the team.
Bill Laimbeer: Better 3 point shooter that Brad but only shot the 3 from the top or Foul line extended. Never from the baseline. Had no back to the basket game at all. 10 rebounds a night every night. Could not jump at all. Gritty defender that had a knack for swiping the fall as the shooter went up.
Vinnie Johnson: Nickname the Microwave because he heat up in a hurry. When he came in the game they would always try to get him a flurry of shots to see if he could get going. In the 3 guard rotation he always played the 2. Short but very strong.
Dennis Rodman: Varejo couldn't carry Rodman's jock. The worm was a great rebouder and defender but was a liability on offense. Alot of the offense when he was in the game him in the opposite corner trying ot pull his man away from the play. Could not shoot. He didn't even seem to try when he was at the foul line.
James Edwards: Budha had one of the best fadeaways te game has ever seen. At 7'1 he still shot a fadeaway after starting with his back to the basket for almost all of his shots. Only fadeaway from the posts. I personally think he was a better rebouder than people give him credit for. There were always several better rebounder on the team that ate the glass. Probally the weakest defender on a great defensive team.
John Salley: Fantastic shot blocker. Good help defender. Always rasied his scoring average in the playoffs in those days.
Darryl Dawkins: Washed up at this point and never played any minutes that counted. Forgot he was on the team.
