A's Win Home Opener vs. M's
Posted on April 4, 2009 at 05:33 PM.
The fans at the Oakland Coliseum went home happy after the A's edged out the Mariners 3-2 in the Oakland home opener. Gio Gonzalez pitched 7 strong shutout innings of 3 hit ball and Ryan Sweeney powered the A's with a lead-off solo shot in the 1st inning and followed with an RBI single later in the game to provide most of the offense. Matt Holliday also contributed an RBI single in his 1-4 night.
But the story was pitching as Gio Gonzalez fanned a career-high 9 batters and was almost unhittable. "He brought his best stuff tonight and kept hitters off balance" said manager Bob Geren. "By the middle innings, they were just guessing."
Joey Devine kept the shutout going through the 8th and Ziegler came in to notch his 4th save, but not before the M's attempted to mount a comeback. It got dicey in the 9th as Beltre blasted a home run to left field off of the out-of-town scoreboard with a man on to bring the M's within 1 run. Then Ziegler went on to load the bases with 2 outs with the ever-dangerous Ichiro at the plate. A fastball up and in got Ichiro to pop out to second base and end the game.

Oakland 4-1

Probably not, but we'll see how long I can keep it up. I enjoy writing sports column style so I'll do it until the novelty wears off. Hope you enjoy reading it!
