Spring has arrived and baseball season is around the corner. Spring training is well underway, my Fantasy Baseball draft is done and my Opening Day tickets are purchased. And as of today, I have begun my Oakland A's franchise on MLB 09: The Show. I've had the game for awhile now, but have spent almost all my time with it in Road to the Show Mode, taking my created player up from AA to AAA and waiting to break into the majors. But I decided to start my A's franchise today to see how my home team would fare with a powered up lineup and untested young pitching staff. Swisher gone, Harden gone, Gaudin, Blanton, Haren, Kotsay, all gone. But how will our new arrivals do this spring? Matt Holliday, Jason Giambi, Nomar Garciaparra, Orlando Cabrera? I've been excited to find out and since I must wait a bit longer for the actual season to start, why not start a virtual season on The Show?
So Opening Day in Anaheim starts up on The Show and what an exciting game it turns out to be, as should be expected. Games between these rivals always brings excitement. Must say that I love the Opening Day 2009 logo that's been spray-painted on the field for the special occasion. Nice touch.
Anaheim takes an early 3 run lead in the 4th inning on a 3-run blast by Howie Kendrick. Duchsherer was pitching well until that one shot tore apart his Opening Day start.
The A's finally get some offense going in the top of the 6th inning with hits by Cust, Garciaparra, Suzuki, Cabrera and Ellis. 3 runs come through in the inning and tie it up. It is short-lived, however, as Torii Hunter goes yard on Josh Outman in the bottom of the sixth with a man on.
Score stands at 5-3 Angels as Lackey goes deep into the 8th inning for the Angels and Casilla holds them for the A's. Fuentes comes into the top of the 9th inning to close the door and struggles with control. The A's score a run on Sweeney's base knock to make it 5-4. Fuentes gets Giambi and Holliday to fly out (who combined for 0-9 in the 3 and 4 spots) and then there's 2 outs. But up comes big Jack Cust with runners on second and third. He comes through with a big 2-run single into CF giving the A's a 6-5 lead and handing Fuentes his first blown save of the season.
Ziegler gets his chance for a save in the bottom of the ninth and comes through as the A's hold on to win 6-5.
Oakland 1-0
