OAKLAND-By all accounts, the Golden State Warriors were ready to let Klay Thompson take hold of shooting guard in their starting lineup. Saturday's trade all but erased any doubt that it was true.

In a stunning move, the Warriors traded backup shooting guard Michael Redd to the Dallas Mavericks for young shooting guard Dominique Jones a day after the team acquired Roger Mason from the New Orleans Hornets.

Redd was supposed to be the backup for Thompson after the team dealt Jarrett Jack and Brandon Rush earlier in the season, but it now appears that Mason will be the primary backup for the Warriors. Golden State reportedly picked up a $2 million option on Jones for next season after the trade was completed.

The former All Star will back up O.J. Mayo in Dallas. In 67 games for the Warriors this season, Redd averaged 6.1 points and 1.1 rebounds. Redd, signed to the veteran's minimum by the Warriors before the season, will negotiate an extension with the Mavericks in the offseason, according to general manager Donnie Nelson.

Jones, the Memphis Grizzlies' first-round pick in 2010, had played his entire career for the Mavericks prior to the trade. In nine games for the Mavericks in 2012-13, Jones averaged 2.4 points. In 60 total games, the South Florida product averaged 2.5 points, 1.3 rebounds and 1.1 assists.
