5/3/13-Warriors acquire Mason in three-team trade

OAKLAND-The Golden State Warriors continued their offseason overhaul Friday, acquiring shooting guard Roger Mason from the New Orleans Hornets in a three-team trade that also sent point guard Mike Bibby from the Cleveland Cavaliers to the Hornets.

Golden State started the three-team trade by dealing reserve power forward Jeremy Tyler to the Cavaliers for Bibby early Friday afternoon. About an hour after news of the Bibby trade leaked, Warriors general manager Bob Myers announced that Bibby had been dealt to the Hornets for Mason.

Mason averaged less than a point in 79 games for the Hornets in 2012-13. The 32-year-old guard will back up Klay Thompson and Michael Redd in Oakland, filling a hole opened when Brandon Rush was dealt to the Atlanta Hawks last week.

A 2002 second round pick out of Virginia, Mason's best year came as a starter for the San Antonio Spurs in 2008-09, averaging 11.8 points and 3.1 rebounds in 82 games that season. Mason agreed to a one-year, $1.25 million extension with Golden State after the trade was completed.

Bibby averaged 3.2 points, 2.1 assists, and 1.1 rebounds in 76 games for the Clippers as a backup behind Kyrie Irving. In New Orleans, he'll mentor rookie Austin Rivers and rising star Greivis Vasquez, who led the league in assists in 2012-13. Bibby's contract runs through the end of next season.

According to Myers, Tyler–in his second year with Golden State–was going to be released or dealt soon by the end of the playoffs. He'll likely be on the move again too; a Cavaliers front office source said the team is looking for a veteran to back up Tristan Thompson, and the team would prefer to keep Jon Leuer over Tyler.

In 37 games for the Warriors in 2012-13, Tyler averaged 2.9 points and 1.3 rebounds. Golden State acquired the 2011 second round pick's rights in a draft-day trade with the Charlotte Bobcats.
