SACRAMENTO-Needing to replace lost depth after sending Jason Thompson to San Antonio a few days prior, the Sacramento Kings swung a quick trade Thursday for one of the NBA's most veteran centers, sending rookie point guard Brian Roberts to the Boston Celtics for center Jason Collins.

Sacramento is expected to target a center in the 2013 NBA Draft to be DeMarcus Cousins' backup, but the Kings were interested in bringing in a veteran to help mentor their young frontcourt, according to Kings general manager Geoff Petrie.

Collins certainly fits that role; no longer a regular starter, the 12-year veteran has mentored Fab Melo, Al Horford, and Kevin Love in each of his last three stops. Collins played just two games for the Celtics in 2012-13, a back-to-back road set in mid-December against the Rockets and Spurs.

Roberts, a 27-year-old undrafted free agent from Dayton, made his NBA debut in December, playing in 28 games for the Kings in 2012-13. He averaged 1.1 points and 1.1 assists per game as the third-string point guard behind Aaron Brooks and Isaiah Thomas.

Boston, with point guards Rajon Rondo, Leandro Barbosa and Daniel Gibson on the roster, waived Roberts in anticipation of the draft. The Celtics, who finished the season at 29-53, are guaranteed to receive one of the top four picks in this year's draft lottery.
