5/1/13-Lakers cut three just days after playoff ouster

Darius Morris

LOS ANGELES-Four days after the Denver Nuggets bounced them from the NBA playoffs, the Los Angeles Lakers began their offseason with a series of cuts, releasing three of their second round draft picks from the last three years.

Point guard Darius Morris, small forward Devin Ebanks, and center Robert Sacre were the three players cut by the Lakers Wednesday as the team clears space on its bench for new acquisitions.

Ebanks, Los Angeles's 2010 second round pick out of West Virginia, averaged 1.6 points and 1.3 rebounds in 27 games for the Lakers in 2012-13. Los Angeles chose to cut Ebanks rather than offer him an extension to his rookie contract. In 71 career games for the Lakers, Ebanks averaged 2.9 points and 1.6 rebounds.

Like Ebanks, Los Angeles chose to let Morris's rookie contract expire. One of the Lakers' 2011 second round picks, the Michigan product played in all 82 of Los Angeles's games in 2012-13, averaging 1.5 points and 1.0 assists. He also appeared in all five of the Lakers' playoff games, scoring five points in their Game 3 win over Denver. In 101 career games for the Lakers, Morris averaged 1.7 points and 1.0 assists.

Sacre, Los Angeles's second round pick in 2012, only played in two games, both in December. The last pick of the 2012 draft out of Gonzaga, Sacre was signed to a one-year deal before the season by the Lakers, who chose not to offer him an extension.
