NEW YORK–Behind 10 points from J.R. Smith, the New York Knicks rode a 26-14 second quarter advantage to a 96-86 opening round win over the Atlanta Hawks.

Smith scored 10 of his 17 points off the bench in the second quarter, four of them coming as part of a 12-2 run by the Knicks to take hold of the game. After trailing 27-23 at the end of the first quarter, the Knicks took a 49-41 lead at halftime and never trailed again.

Carmelo Anthony led the Knicks with 23 points and four rebounds, while Steve Novak pitched in 12 points and four rebounds off the bench for New York. Ronnie Brewer added nine points off the bench for the Knicks, who outscored Atlanta's bench 55-13 in the win.

Louis Williams led the Hawks with 28 points, seven assists, five rebounds and four steals. Atlanta had three other starters in double figures: Josh Smith tallied 16 points and seven rebounds, Al Horford 11 points and eight rebounds, and Jeff Teague 10 points and four assists.
