DENVER–At halftime, the Los Angeles Lakers looked to be headed to an easy win in the opening game of their first round matchup with the Denver Nuggets. Danilo Gallinari and Andre Iguodala made sure that didn't happen.
Despite trailing by as many as 18 points at one point, Gallinari and the Nuggets mounted a furious comeback, topping the Lakers 94-90 thanks to a bizarre sequence of events that allowed Denver to seize the lead for good with just over a minute left.
After taking a 25-21 lead to start the game, Denver came out flat in the second quarter. By the time head coach George Karl called timeout, Los Angeles had used a 19-4 run to open a 40-25 lead.
Exiting the timeout, Denver almost immediately turned the ball over, leading to a three-pointer by Metta World Peace that put Denver in a 18-point hole.
From that point, Denver closed the quarter on a 18-8 run, cutting Los Angeles' lead to 51-43 by halftime. After trading baskets with the Lakers in the third quarter, Denver turned the boosters late in the fourth quarter.
Trailing by just two points, 84-82, two unusual, costly fouls by the Lakers allowed the Nuggets to open a 90-84 lead with just over a minute remaining.
Pau Gasol was whistled for defensive three seconds in the key with 1:21 remaining, just the second time this season Gasol had been whistled for that violation. Ty Lawson calmly sank the penalty free throw and added a drive to the basket for an 85-84 lead.
On the ensuing Lakers possession, point guard Chris Duhon had the ball stripped by Andre Iguodala, who recovered it with an open lane to the basket.
Instead, Iguodala was fouled from behind by Metta World Peace, and the clear path foul called gave Iguodala two free throws and the Nuggets the ball. Iguodala made both and Gallinari added his fourth three-pointer of the night to give the Nuggets a 90-84 lead.
"I thought I had a look on the ball," World Peace said. "but (Andre) turned left as I reached. I wrapped him up to avoid tackling him and getting the flagrant. It happens."
Gallinari led all scorers with 26 points, and finished with a team-high 10 rebounds for a double-double. Iguodala slotted in right behind Gallinari with 25 points, eight assists, and four rebounds. Lawson finished with 17 points and seven assists.
Kobe Bryant led the Lakers with 25 points and 10 rebounds. Antawn Jamison added 13 points and seven rebounds in his first playoff action since 2010. World Peace and Gasol both had 11 points.
