Can roster updates be expanded to help the Franchise experience?
One recent advancement that has helped the current generation of sports titles are the in-season roster updates. NBA 2k11 takes it one step further with NBA today, which provides relevant commentary and presentation elements to make the game current with what is occuring in the league at that moment.
I can't help but think that it would be very popular for gamers if developers used the roster updates to help freshen up franchise play. In addition to updating rosters, developers could also update team records, injuries, etc. at various points during the year. The gamer could then pick a team and begin a franchise from that same point going forward. Imagine being a Nuggets fan after losing 'Melo and having the ability to take control of the team today with their 37-26 record and 5th seed in the West and trying to guide them to a surprise title run. Or you could take control of a team that's on the outside-looking-in on a playoff spot and help them go on a late season surge.
The abiltiy to start a franchise at various points during a season can allow a gamer to immerse themselves in a real-world story-line and play it out digitally. It might also help give some fresh options and variety to franchises that otherwise lack them (I won't name any specific titles that have exclusive rights).
