I entered, dapping everybody, glad to meet and share a meal once again. Everything looked great and smelled even better. Then without warning, the host laid a gigantic turd in the middle of the dining table. Once again, I am stuck at this stupid screen as I was a few months ago after an update (see graphic below).
I do not get what VC does for MyNBA. Almost from inception, I have collected 100,000 or more coins playing MyLeague or MyNBA only to not cash them in. I am not interested in swag or power-ups. I am interested in the story of a team and a season.
I love basketball: I do not need payment as motivation. Basketball in and of itself is a diversion from life. I have always had the feeling if professional basketball did not exist, Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant would be gym rats for free; that is the little bit I may have in common with them. I cannot speak for all MyNBA mode users or other sim heads, but I essentially want to experience basketball as my reward. I do not need coins that cannot pay a mortgage. I want to experience basketball to forget about the mortgage and other mundane financial responsibilities.
I have yet to understand why sports video game developers mix the code and mechanics of their various modes into a soupy mess. NBA Live 2000 had an arcade mode, a casual mode, and a simulation mode. The simulation mode could never quite become cutting-edge because its code was mixed with the others. At the time I thought if simulation mode was the core of their engine, it would be easy to have switches to break the rules of reality and physics to create silly and fun games for every taste.
Some people want to play basketball with lowered gravity and jump ten feet high. Others want to be a seven-foot-three Steph Curry or a Michael Jordan with even more superpowers than he had in reality. I do not begrudge that because that is part of what video games are for. What is frustrating is having my experience lumped together with theirs.
I am not interested in coins or anything they can be traded for, yet here I am typing about a crap experience that intruded on a beautiful game I had just completed. I was laughing inwardly as I noticed Paul Pressey's wide shoulders making him look like a short power-forward just as I remembered him in reality. I was getting torched by Sidney Moncrief because as great a defender as he is NBA 2K, he also has a dangerous midrange game that is hard to guard with Andrew Toney; realistic.
The gameplay in the latest update has improved again. Each update is subtle: This time I am seeing improved decision-making on help defense as teammates help to a point, then peel off to return to their assignments if possible. Earlier in the cycle teammates would doggedly overhelp even after the player I was controlling recovered and did not require help anymore, which would result in two defenders on one offender.
A couple of hours ago I was cursing. I gave myself time to cool down before making this blog entry. Now I must put NBA 2K23 down and immerse myself in Skyrim until Development repairs this. It would not be necessary if I did not have to accept stupid coins for things I do not want.
It is Friday: Enjoy the NBA on TV tonight!
Oh, as promised, my fantasy logo for "Game... Blouses" is in case the blog avatar is not clear.
UPDATE 4:22 PM 02/25/2023: Went offline and finished the game and bypassed the VC screen. Now, I will go online to see if the problem persists.
