The game started out slowly for both teams, with only 8 points being scored in the first 5 minutes between them. Austin Rivers provided a spark off the Hornets bench and the game subsequently came to life. The first quarter came down to a close finish after Al-Farouq Aminu hit a pair of free throws with 0.8 seconds left on the clock. Aminu dominated the first quarter, scoring 14 of his 20 points in the period.
The second quarter was un-eventful until Anthony Davis threw down a thunderous dunk in traffic with 5.4 seconds left in the half. Al Jefferson would go onto to hit a tough mid range jumper to beat the buzzer and bring the Jazz withing 4 points at the long break. The Hornets led, 54-50.
The teams traded baskets the entire third quarter. Jamaal Tinsley of the Jazz was injured halfway through the quarter and was sidelined with Back Spasms for the rest of the game. The Hornets led at the 3rd quarter break, 82-77.
There was something different about the Jazz in the final quarter. The big men came out with much more energy and this led to the Hornets getting destroyed in the rebounding department. The scores were tied with 30 seconds left in the game after Al Jefferson made his pair of free throws. Grievis Vasquez dribbled the ball down the court after a timeout and gave it off to Eric Gordon, who called for an isolation. Gordon had a mismatch, with Paul Millsap guarding him out on the perimeter. Gordon drove to the left elbow and hit Millsap with a stepback move, freeing him up for the jumper. Gordon put the Hornets up a duece with 9.2 seconds remaining. The Jazz had no timeouts remaining. Mo Williams sprinted up the court and passed to Al Jefferson. Jefferson spun into the post against Robin Lopez, turned around and faded away on a jumpshot. Bottom. The game was tied at 102, with 3.6 seconds on the clock.Monty Williams called for time and tried to set up a play that would allow Gordon to get to the basket, but it wasn't to be. Gordon had been blocked by Jefferson. Overtime in New Orleans!

The overtime period started just how the fourth quarter had ended, in a flurry. Millsap and Mo Williams connected for an alley-oop jam, while Vasquez and Davis did the same thing on the other end. With 1:30 left in the game, Gordon would hit a tough And-1 layup to give the Hornets a two point lead. After making the free throw and putting his team up by 3 points, Gordon got a steal and a fastbreak dunk to put the home team up 5 with 1:15 left in the game. The Jazz couldn't buy a bucket in the OT and eventually capitulated, giving the Hornets their first win of the season. Gordon scored 11 of the teams 15 overtime points to take his total to 33 for the game.
