The Pistol
As you can see the QB is closer to the line of scrimmage than in a normal shotgun. The RB is located close behind him which disguises which way a run would go or if it was even a run. In the shotgun the direction of the run is almost always known by the defense and most times it goes outside, but in the pistol you can run to both directions inside and outside. The pistol's running game is well known as it's led to Nevada leading rushing in three years and having three 1,000+ yard rushers in the same season. Nevada's main rushing play is the read option.
The passing game is just as potent. It allows the QB to be in a 3 step drop position allready to help the QB read the short passes. The pistol also allows the QB to see over the Offensive Line to read the defense like the shotgun. Play-action passes also work extremely well in the pistol since the defense also has to honest the run along with the pass. QBs can also get out of the pocket easier if neccessary and be closer to the line of scrimmage in case of pressure or a sack than in the shotgun.
Thanks guys for reading my first blog and please comment on how you like it and if i need to improve anything. I also highly encourage you to at least try the pistol, who knows it could be the game changer for you to surprise you opponent.

Keep up the good work. I'm always excited to hear more strategy using the pistol

I would like to know if you need a scrambling type QB to run it effectively. Thanks.

i love using the pistol in NCAA 11 and i think its something cool to try if u are looking for an unusual but effective offense!

@eraserx13 not neccessarily, you don't have to run a option type pistol offense you could just run more of a traditional offense in the pistol like draws powers slams counters and simple WCO passes or air raid concepts

Very nice. Look up my videos on the pistol option attack.

I've nicknamed my offense the pistol whipped offense. Cause thats how you feel after I'm done with you. Kinda surprised this hasn't caught on in the nfl. Alot of guys coming out work exclusively in the shotgun. It seems like it would be the best of both worlds. A guy like Alex Smith could succeed in this type of offense.
