Game Notes
South Alabama enters this week 1-0. Last week the Jaguars defeated FCS-West 35-26. This is South Alabama's first road game of the season. Last week's offensive player of the game was wide receiver Bryant Lavender who had 6 catches for 121 yards and a touchdown. The defensive player of the week for the Jaguars last week was defensive end Alex Page who recorded 6 tackles, 3 TFL, 2 sacks, and a forced fumble! Coach Landon_is_legend comes into this game with a career record of 1-0.

Tulane comes into this week's contest at 0-1 after an opening game 38-19 loss to FCS-Southeast. The Green Wave are led by wide receiver Ryan Grant who has 12 catches for 132 yards and a touchdown on the season so far. Tulane is playing its second home game of the season and are 0-1 at home currently this season. Tulane is coached by Curtis Johnson who is in his second season as the coach of the Green Wave. Johnson currently holds a 2-11 mark as the head man of the Green Wave.

Press-Register's thoughts: South Alabama is a young program that cannot raise the bar of expectations too high early on. It's important for the Jaguars to find positive things to build on for the future. However, South Alabama is playing a program in Tulane that has been struggling for a long time now. While the Green Wave certainly do have some talented players, the Jaguars have to feel they have a realistic shot at this game. The key for the Jaguars will be turnover margin and stopping wide receiver Ryan Grant. If South Alabama can hold Grant to under 100 receiving yards and win the turnover battle, you have to like their chances. South Alabama finds a way.

Coach landon_is_legend made his debut tonight against the FCS West team. This is South Alabama's first year as being eligible for the Sun Belt championship and their second year as a FBS member. Coach landon_is_legend was brought in to shape the program into a contender in the Sun Belt. While that will take time, the Jaguars fans, were eagerly anticipating the debut of the new coach. Coach landon_is_legend finally got to roam the sidelines of Ladd-Peebles Stadium for the first time tonight.

The conditions in Mobile, were rainy but it was not going to stop either team from giving their all. FCS West won the toss and elected to receive the kickoff. On their first drive,FCS West had an impressive 13 play drive that resulted in a 38 yard field goal to put FCS West up 3-0 with 6:57 to go in the opening quarter.

South Alabama finally received their first opportunity to put the offense out on the field, but were forced into a three and out and had to punt the ball back to FCS West. FCS West started their second drive of the game with 5:16 to go in the opening quarter. FCS West went on another impressive 8 play drive. However, the FCS West team was facing a fourth down from the Jaguars 17 yard line and decided to go for it. It was a bad decision as Jaguars defensive end Alex Page came up with a huge sack that halted the FCS West drive and gave the Jaguars some momentum.

The momentum would not last long. On the second play of the Jaguars drive, quarterback Brandon Bridge was picked off on a screen pass by FCS West cornerback Joseph who took it 21 yards for the pick six to put FCS West up 10-0 with 2:33 remaining in the opening quarter.

South Alabama would finally find some success on offense as Brandon Bridge would connect with wide receiver Bryant Lavender for 20 yards, setting up a 7 yard scamper from Bridge to close the gap to 10-7 FCS West with 8:53 remaining until half.

FCS West would strike quick as quarterback Mike Sowell would connect with Horatio Garcia for 61 yards to put FCS West up 17-7 with 8:11 remaining until half. However, the next kickoff would be taken by Darius Morrow 85 yards all the way down to the FCS West 8 yard line. A few plays later, Jaguars running back Jay Jones would score from 5 yards out to close the gap to 17-14 FCS West with 6:49 remaining until half.

FCS would eat some clock and go on an impressive drive the led them all the way down to the Jaguars 9 yard line before having to settle for a 26 yard field goal that put them up 20-14 with 2:53 remaining until half.

The Jaguars would show determination as quarterback Ross Matheny would help the Jaguars take all of the momentum into half as he connected with receiver Bryant Lavender on a beautiful 42 yard strike that would help the Jaguars take the lead into the locker room 21-20 at the half.

We caught up with coach landon_is_legend on his way to the locker room and this is what he said, "We're very fortunate to be up in this game. We gave up a big play on defense and a pick six, but when you look at it, the defense is playing well holding them to one touchdown in the half, the offense just needs to step up, and we need to be technically sound and limit turnovers if we're going to win this game."

To begin the second half, both teams swapped possessions a couple of times. FCS West finally generated some momentum by driving the ball down to the Jaguars 31 yard line. However, on the next play, quarterback Mike Sowell would scramble down to the Jaguars 23 yard line but would be stripped by Jaguars defensive end Alex Page. This was Page's second drive stopper of the game.

The Jaguars could not do anything with the ball, though. The teams would swap possessions again before the Jaguars could finally generate a drive. The Jaguars drove it down to the FCS West 30 yard line when Brandon Bridge would hit T.J. Glover from 30 yards out to put the Jaguars on top 28-20 with 1:39 remaining in the third. The score would remain 28-20 South Alabama heading into the fourth and final quarter.

FCS West would strike first in the fourth quarter by going on a methodical 14 play drive that would end when running back Smith would go in from a yard out to close the gap to 28-26. FCS West would decide to go for two to tie the game, but quarterback Mike Sowell's pass would be deflected in the endzone and fall incomplete. Keeping the score 28-26 in favor of the Jaguars with 7:22 remaining in the game.

Jaguars quarterback would lead a 52 yard drive before being picked off in the endzone by FCS West's safety Lambert. The lead would remain 28-26 in favor of the Jaguars with 6:20 remaining in the game. FCS West would go three and out and have to punt back to the Jaguars choosing to rely on their defense.

This choice would prove to be a mistake as both quarterbacks Ross Matheny and Brandon Bridge would lead the Jaguars on an 8 play drive that would end when running back Jay Jones would find paydirt from 5 yards out extending the Jaguars lead to 35-26. Making it a two possession game with only 2:48 remaining.

FCS West would drive the ball down the field but would turn it over on downs with 1:30 remaining in the ball game. The Jaguars would run out the remaining 1:30 preserving a 35-26 win in the debut for coach landon_is_legend.

We caught up with coach landon_is_legend after the game to garner his thoughts. Coach said, "We have a scrappy group of guys here at USA, they overcame adversity and achieved the ultimate goal of victory. Yes, it wasn't perfect, we allowed over 430 yards on defense and we were -1 in the turnover margin. At the end of the day you accept the fact that you came out ahead and realize that the mistakes made today have to be corrected. It's always more fun correcting mistakes after a win than a loss. We will correct the mistakes and be ready to take on Tulane in the Lousiana Superdome next week. Go Jaguars!!"

Tulane lost their first game against FCS-Southeast 38-19. The Jaguars will be 1-0 and Tulane 0-1 heading into next week's contest.

Team: South Alabama Jaguars

Coach: Landon_is_legend

Offensive Playbook: Northwestern

Defensive Playbook: 4-3

Quarter Length: 10 minutes

Difficulty: Custom Heisman sliders

Coaches philosophy: I don't have a set offense or defense I prefer. I like to run an offense and defense that best fits my personnel from year to year. This year I decided the Northwestern playbook best fit my offensive personnel and a 4-3 alignment best fit my defense. Offensively it revolves around our two different quarterbacks, Brandon Bridge who is dual threat and Ross Metheny. Defensively, It revolves around our linebacking core led by middle linebacker Bryson James and right outside linebacker Enrique Williams. Offensively, I will try to be balanced but the run game is incredibly important with both the running backs and Brandon Bridge at quarterback. Defensively, I will take a bend but don't break approach by playing a lot of zone as my corners are weak in man to man coverage. My personal philosophy is to win you must be sound in fundamentals and win the turnover margin. Looking forward to building the Jaguars into a competitor in the Sun Belt.

Offensive Key Players: QB Brandon Bridge, QB Ross Metheny

Defensive Key Players: MLB Bryson James ROLB Enrique Williams

HoopsHype has learned that the new GM of the Houston Rockets is possibly looking to unload Kevin Martin. When the new GM for the Rockets was asked, he replied, "We are always evaluating ways to make our team better, whether that includes any plans in trading Kevin Martin cannot be discussed at this time." Our sources tell us that the Rockets are looking to unload Martin at the right price though, it is no secret that the Rockets are high on Jeremy Lamb and this could be a way to make room for him in the starting lineup. While we must stress nothing is imminent, it is pretty safe to say, that Kevin Martin's time as a Rocket could be running out. Make sure to follow HoopsHype on twitter @hoopshype.
