NCAA Football '13: Possible Improvements
Posted on December 12, 2011 at 11:44 AM.
NCAA Football '12 was a great game. It took everything I liked about 2011 and expanded on it, adding more uniforms, better stadiums, and a bunch of other details that I can't remember/didn't notice. But, of course, there are many improvements that can and should be made. Here are a few of them:

1. Fix the running motions: Every player has the same running style, and it looks ridiculous on all but a few players. The worst is when a defensive end picks up a fumble and starts running it back for a TD. It looks like Chaz Bono with Michael Johnson's sprinting form.

2. Make special teams matter: In the probably 150 or so games I've played in their entirety, I've returned one kick for a TD on All-American and one for a TD on Varsity. I've never returned a punt for a TD, and I average about 8 or 9 yards a return depending on who's returning (I've gotten a couple of 25-yarders with players like Tyrann Mathieu and Quandre Diggs). I've never even been close to blocking a FG/punt.

3. Varied TD celebrations: Usually, I'm not a pest about minor details like this (I'm going to be on this blog post), but if a player scores a big TD in a big game, he should go nuts when he crosses the goal line.

4. Storming the field: When a team pulls a massive upset, fans should storm the field. It would be an easy animation to put into the game. It wouldn't require anything but an overhead shot of the stadium, with the field being flooded by rowdy, drunken college kids.

5. Receiver looks: Receivers seem to have telepathic abilities in this game. Now, I understand that in certain routes, like a back-shoulder fade, the receiver can't see the ball and must adjust in order to try to make a play, but on Hail Marys and deep passes, receivers should look for the ball before catching it.

6. Short dreads: Implement short dreadlocks. I appreciated the long dreads, but adding the short ones would be the finishing touch as far as hair goes.

7. Call pass interference when there is pass interference: Self-explanatory.

8. Mentality: This is an entirely new method that probably couldn't be taken advantage of until maybe 2014. Still, it is a fascinating idea nonetheless: Teams always talk about having a "mental edge" or being "mentally tough." Teams go into opposing stadiums and sometimes lose their composure and end up falling prey to the crowd's roar. Receivers, after being crushed by a safety or corner, will begin to freeze up whenever a pass comes their way, and will start to gator arm catches (lose effectiveness). When a big-time player and leader goes down, the soul from one team seems to disappear, leaving a squad with no motivation. Sometimes, teams have reputations for being hard-hitting or dominant offensively, and the other team will either shrink down and take a savage beating or stand up to the challenge. There is an entire mental aspect to college football that just isn't seen in the NCAA Football games, and I think that this implementation would change the way the game is played.

NCAA already fixed the Mentality on last Gen then they of coarse took it out. It wasn't perfect but, cool. NCAA football 05 had the "New Match-up stick: Ratings change based on the player's ability to handle pressure. Track the crowd's impact on each player an exploit the mismatches." I know what you said added to this but, this is the problem with EA. If they just left all the last gen stuff in the games and improved/added to them we would have the game we all want by now. Love the other things you listed too.

What about long hair on white guys too even just long enough to hang out the back of the helmet

Just dont make the gameplay anything like Madden 12. This game plays soo much better. I think adding dynamic player emotion would be one of the biggest improvements they could make. Add "Swag" to players. Ex. Watch Justin Blackmon catch a pass, and his reaction to the defense like you cant stop me. Also DLC for uniforms. and then pretty much what you listed above. Also make the FACES of the players in the game look like College students. Not 30 yr old men.

2. Make special teams matter: In the probably 150 or so games I've played in their entirety, I've returned one kick for a TD on All-American and one for a TD on Varsity. This one is a slippery slope. The last thing you want is to have PR or KR TD's every game or even every couple of games. At most, teams might have 2 or 3 of these every season, but more frequently teams do not have any. Same for blocked kicks. I have had probably 5 KR TD's and 1 or 2 PR TD's in my 100 some games, and that is about perfect as far as I'm concerned. I've also blocked 1 punt and 1 field goal. The problem is that as soon as they loosen that up you have cheesers figuring out how to take advantage of it and turning games into a stupid mess.

PUT THE REAL NAMES ON THERE

2. Make special teams matter. I average about 4-5 touch downs a season during punt returns and 3-4 TD KR returns a season. There is no need to fix this. I don't want to start scoring 20 TD's a game. It's fine where it's at. I play on Heisman. Improve your game!!

4. About 4 years ago or so... they had storming the field in the game, but the NCAA did not want it in the game because they don't want fans storming the field in actually real life game. Nothing has changed... they still do it. So, just put it in the game I say.
