LIONS HAND STAFFORD, RAMS FIRST LOSS OF SEASON

When the season began, the week 7 matchup between the Los Angeles Rams and the Detroit Lions was earmarked, because of the trade that sent QB Matthew Stafford from Detroit, to Los Angeles, in exchange for Jared Goff, and draft picks. The Rams were expected to be pretty good. The Lions were not. Yet, entering the game, both teams were 7-0. Lions first year head coach Dan Campbell has his Lions playing really well on both sides of the ball. But, he still called this a statement game. "This is our chance to make a statement. Get a statement win over a really good team. Show everyone that we're not a fluke, we belong" he said.

Make a statement is just what the Lions did. The Lions came from behind to hand the Rams their first defeat, 28-24. The Rams led at halftime, and then again heading into the 4th quarter. Both times the Lions came back, taking the lead for good with 6:16 left in the game. And then their defense held on for the victory.

The Lions opened the scoring at 3:06 of the first, on an 11 yard touchdown run by Jamaal Williams. Following a Jared Goff interception, the Rams tied the game on Matthew Stafford's 42 yard pass to Robert Brooks early in the second quarter. The Lions would retake the lead on a 1 yard Goff to T.J. Hockenson TD pass, putting the Lions up 14-7. But the Rams came back with a pair of late TD's. Stafford and Brooks hooked up for the second time, this one from 4 yards out, with 1:55 left in the first half, to tie the game. Stafford then found Tyler Higbee from 13 yards out, with just 10 seconds left in the first half, to put the Rams up 21-14.

Detroit tied the game in the third, on a D'Andre Swift 1 yard touchdown run with 4:22 left. Los Angeles would go back out in front 24-21 on a Michael Gay 40 yard field goal with 8:59 let in the game. But, the Lions would come back, on Jamaal Williams second touchdown run of the game, this one from a yard out, putting them back on top 28-24 with 6:16 left in the game.

Then the game got real interesting.

The Lions Tracy Walker picked Stafford off with 4:55 left. But the Rams picked the ball off right back, and drove down to the goal line. But, the Lions stopped them when Sony Michel was stuffed by Alex Anzalone on 4th and goal from the 1. Detroit got the ball back, 2:31 left in the game. But, they couldn't get a first down to ice it, and had to punt the ball back to the Rams.

The Rams drove the ball down to the Lions 18. But, on 4th and inches, with just 13 seconds left, and no time outs, Stafford threw a pass that went out of the back of the end zone. The Lions had held off the Rams for a 28-24 win.

With the win, the Lions improve to 7-0. They return home next week, to face the 2-5 Philadelphia Eagles.
