NHL TRADE RUMORS: 9-0-0 Start has Red Wings All-In

In an interview on the "Talkin' Hockey" podcast Monday afternoon, GM Steve Yzerman was asked if the Red Wings 9-0-0 start has accelerated the rebuilding process. Yzerman had this to say.

"Well, I think obviously we've put ourselves in a really good position. The moves we made in the off season have so far panned out better than expected. And we were left with some flexibility, in that the contracts we handed out were only for one or two years. We have cap space where we can be flexible and make moves to improve the team. So, yeah, I think it kind of accelerates the process so to speak. We're exploring every possibility."

When asked about possibly going after one or more of the unsigned RFA's still on the market, he said this...

"Well, I think you wouldn't be doing justice if you didn't at least kick the tires on everything. There are some very good, young players, that would fit in here, not only give us a chance to win now, but in the future as well. But we would have to make sure the deal is right for both parties involved."

RED WINGS, ISLANDERS IN TRADE TALKS

NHL Trade Rumors has learned that the Detroit Red Wings and the New York Islanders have been in ongoing trade talks. Not many details are known, but it is believed that the talks involve the Islanders two unsigned RFA's, center Mathew Barzal, and defenseman Ryan Pulock. The Islanders are right up against the cap. Pulock has expressed interest in resigning with the Islanders, but Barzal, who is currently playing in Europe, has requested a trade. Barzal would be an intriguing target for the Red Wings, as he is just 23 years old, and already has three seasons of 60 or more points on his resume.

RED WINGS LINKED TO RFA ETHAN BEAR

The Red Wings have reportedly been in discussion with Edmonton Restricted Free Agent defenseman Ethan Bear. Bear had 5 goals and 16 assists in 71 games with the Oilers last season. He is another young defenseman that the Oilers desperately want back, but has yet to resign. The Red Wings, who have three 2nd round draft picks in the 2021 NHL Entry Draft, have the ammo to potentially offer Bear an offer sheet.

RED WINGS DISCUSSING A POTENTIAL NIELSEN/DEKEYSER "SALARY DUMP" TRADE WITH A COUPLE TEAMS

NHL Trade Rumors has also learned that the Detroit Red Wings are in discussions with a couple teams about the possibility of a "salary dump" trade involving either Frans Nielsen, or Danny DeKeyser. Nielsen is signed through 2022 at $5.25 million per season. DeKeyser is signed through 2022 at $5.965 million per season. Any potential trade would likely involve the Red Wings sending a draft pick along with the player as incentive for the team to take on the contract. The Red Wings could also conceivably retain part of either salary. DeKeyser would definitely be the easier of the two players to move, though neither will be particular easy. No teams were mentioned in the report, though Dallas, Columbus, and Philadelphia would seem to make sense for DeKeyser.
