Sunday's series finale in Seattle between the two bottom teams in the AL West saw both strong pitching and powerful hitting, as each starting pitcher turned in a quality start and all the game's runs were scored on home runs, as the Mariners avoided a three-game sweep at the hands of the Rangers, snapping a five-game losing streak with a 3-1 victory at Safeco Field.
James Paxton (1-2) and Cole Hamels (0-2) both posted three consecutive shutout innings to start the game. But the heart of the Mariners' lineup would finally help the team score its first runs since Friday's series opener in the fourth, as Nelson Cruz and Robinson Cano hit back-to-back home runs to quickly make it 3-0.
Texas' Nomar Mazara hit a pinch-hit solo home run to deep right-center field on a 3-2 count in the eighth inning, but it was too little too late. the Rangers brought the tying run to the plate in the ninth but couldn't score again.
The Rangers next travel to Oakland for their second series against the Athletics of the young season. The three-game set will conclude Texas' current nine-game road trip, kicking off with Tyson Ross (0-1, 4.61 ERA) facing Daniel Mengden (0-2, 18.00 ERA).
