Yu Darvish was one strike away from a no-hitter Saturday at Safeco Field, holding the host Seattle Mariners hitless until two outs in the bottom of the ninth when No. 1 batter Jean Segura singled up the middle on a 1-2 count to break up the bid, as the Rangers won for the second straight day in a 7-0 shutout.
Darvish (2-1) lost the perfect game in the second inning when he hit Kyle Seager with a pitch, but he would not allow another baserunner until Segura's single in the ninth. He finished the game for his second career shutout and first complete game of the season, winning his second consecutive start. The Rangers ensured a series win over the Mariners (4-8) and climbed out of the AL West cellar with their second straight victory.
The Rangers also clobbered three home runs in the game, their second straight multi-home run game. Adrian Beltre (2), Rougned Odor (5) and Nomar Mazara (1) all hit long balls in the game. Texas chased a second straight Seattle ace before they could get through the sixth. After beating Felix Hernandez in the opener, the Rangers sent Hisashi Iwakuma (2-1) home with a loss after he entered the game with a 2-0 record and sub-1.00 ERA.
Texas will go for the interdivision sweep on Sunday with Cole Hamels facing James Paxton, who enters the game winless with a 5.73 ERA.
