Is Jamarcus Russell really a bust or just a product of his environment?
Posted on May 8, 2010 at 01:48 AM.
I know Jamarcus Russell has been a real disappointment in his short NFL career(Overweight, sleeping in meetings, and caring more about his contract than anything else), but as I look back at the Raiders Draft picks in the last 10 years they all seem to be bust in a way. Which makes me wonder if its the players or the franchise. I remember Warren Sapp saying when he was in Oakland the phone would ring on the sidelines during games and it would be Al Davis calling down to the coaches telling them to go deep the next play. Thats one of the funniest things I have ever heard of in regards to football. It showed the instability thats going on with that franchise and made me think that its a bad environment for young players. I also recall Javon Walker wanting to be released and offering to pay back the big contract and Al Davis talking him out if it was another thing that showed a lack of judgment by the raiders. If a player doesn't have the will to play let him go especially if he is offering to return his money. It pretty bad when one of your best and longest tenure first round draft picks is a kicker.

Raiders first round picks the last 10 years:

2009- #7 Darrius Heyward-Bey WR
Looks and smells like a bust.

2008 - #4 Darren McFadden RB
Coming into the draft, the buzz was centered around Darren McFadden's speed and playmaking ability. It is too early to make a call on him. However, he did not make much of an impression his rookie year, losing time to a turf toe injury. He didn't have big year last year as well.

2007- #1 JaMarcus Russell QB
Russell got off to a rough start with the Raider Nation, as he was involved in a contract holdout that kept him off the roster until the day before the opening game. He has been more miss than hit, and was recently released.

2006 - #7 Michael Huff S
Huff lost his starting position to Hiram Eugene midway through 2008. He has been labeled a bust, and managed to do that the old fashioned way, he has earned it. He started out doing well covering the top tight ends in the division, but went downhill from there. he has issues in coverage and with tackling.

2005 - #23 Fabian Washington CB
Washington was decidedly average during his time in Oakland. The Raiders traded him for a fourth round pick during the 2008 draft.

2004 #2 Robert Gallery OT
Gallery had a rough start, but has become the poster boy for reclamation projects, as he has emerged as one of the top offensive guards under Tom Cable's tutelage.

2003 #31 Nnamdi Asomugha DB
At that time Aso was an unknown, and was widely derided as a 'reach.' However, he has since emerged as an elite cover cornerback.

2003 #32 Tyler Brayton DE
Brayton was moved between defensive end and linebacker, but did not excel as either. He walked as a free agent after the 07 season.

2002 #17 Phillip Buchanon DB
Buchanon was an electric returner, but a lousy cover corner. He rapidly earned the nickname P-Burnt before he was traded on draft day in 2005.

2002 #23 Napoleon Harris LB
Harris emerged as a rookie, and replaced the veteran Greg Biekert. He could not sustain that success, and he was traded to Minnesota in 2005 as part of the trade to bring Randy Moss to the Raiders.

2001 #28 Derrick Gibson DB
Gibson was lousy in coverage and a below average tackler. He is now out of football.

2000 #17 Sebastian Janikowski K
This move became an instant punchline, and has caused much consternation among the Raider Nation in the ensuing years. However, Janikowski has become the all time leader in scoring by a Raider, and has cornered the market on the longest field goals in Raider history.

I really liked JaMarcus Russell, i was a big supporter, but i think that allot of the blame should be on him from what i herd around town (were both from the same-place)he wasn't taking care of him self hanging out with people that wasn't looking out for him, he just wasn't focus on football, if he would have had a good mentor on and off the field he would be in a better place.

I would say Russell is a product of his environment but when a pro QB can't complete 50% of his passes, it leads me to believe he is the environment. And it isn't as if his receivers are dropping balls. His passes aren't even in the same area code....

I think a change of scenery could help however, from what I have read and heard, his work ethic is terrible....

as of right now yes hes a bust. He didnt take his career up to this point serious. Always came in camp over weight, never really worked on his footwork and everything else in order to be a great QB. Now hes still young but I dont think a team will even take a chance on him until he get in shape and show teams he ready to be a QB.

He was a bust but his environment helped... I'd say it was a group effort.

BUST

Although the Raiders haven't been great at finiding him help, JaMarcus is a victim of his own laziness. He does/did not properly prepare for games and did not even make an honest effort. Unless he changes his work habits (in the gym/field/film room) he is a: BUST.

Big Bust. I am a Life long raider fan, and one of the few who was excited to draft him.He has alot of the Physical tools, but he does not work hard. he is lazy and stole his salary. I hope they place a rookie draft cap soon.

yea i watched russell a few times. the raiders suck as an organization but dude is one of the worst qbs i have ever seen play proffesional football. i think there are third stringers in football right now better than this guy. its amazing someone with so much talent would just throw it all away like that
