MAHLE, TIGERS NO HIT BLUE JAYS IN SERIES FINALE
Not much could top the excitement of yesterday's comeback from a 5 run 9th inning deficit....But the Tigers found a way to top it.
With a no hitter!!!!
Tyler Mahle, acquired on Friday from the Cincinnati Reds, and making his Tiger debut, pitched the 9th no hitter in franchise history. Mahle allowed just one base runner, a walk to Raimel Tapia in the 6th inning. He struck out 10.
Kyle Dutcher led off the game with a home run, his 29th of the year. It's the 7th leadoff home run he has hit this season. Austin Meadows added a solo home run in the second, his 25th, to put the Tigers up 2-0. It stayed that way until the 8th, when Miguel Cabrera launched a 2 run blast to left, his 25th, making it 4-0.
Dutcher would hit another solo home run in the 9th, his 30th of the season, putting the Tigers up 5-0. Spencer Torkelson hit his league leading 36th home run later on in the inning, a 2 run shot, capping the scoring.
All the while, Mahle was dominating the Blue Jay hitters with a mix of fastballs and two really sharp breaking pitches. Alek Manoah started for the Jays, and pitched well, allowing 2 runs in 6 innings, taking the loss.
UP NEXT
The Tigers begin the month of August with a trip to Minnesota for a three game series with the Twins (45-61.)
Game 1: Michael Pineda (7-1, 3.16) vs Joe Ryan (4-5, 3.84)
Game 2: Tarik Skubal (17-0, 2.30) vs Randy Dobnak (4-9, 4.60)
Game 3: Eduardo Rodriguez (15-1, 3.34) vs Dylan Bundy (4-7, 5.36)

TIGERS COME FROM BEHIND TO SLAM BLUE JAYS
It was another improbable comeback. But, this season, the Detroit Tigers have made the improbable probable. The Tigers, some how, some way, found a way to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat. This time trailing 6-1 in the 9th inning, down to their final two outs. In a game where they could get virtually no offense going against Kevin Gausman Tim Mayza, and Julian Merryweather. Still, they found a way to win.
The Tigers had to piece together a bullpen game, using 7 pitchers. Still, they found a way to win.
Wily Peralta started the game. Manager A.J. Hinch had hoped to get 3 or 4 good innings from Peralta, who has struggled most of the season. He got 5 innings of 1 run ball. Still, he left the game with the Tigers trailing 1-0, because, quite simply, Kevin Gausman was eating them alive. The Tigers trailed 2-0 in the 7th, before a Juan Soto home run cut the deficit to 2-1. It was Soto's 27th of the season, second with the Tigers. But the bullpen couldn't keep it close. Tyler Alexander allowed a pair of runs in the 7th, then Joe Jimenez and Andrew Chafin each allowed a run in the 8th, before Michael Fulmer came in and shut down the Astros in order.
Still, all looked lost for the Tigers. 6-1 Blue Jays, Tigers down to their last 3 outs. And then, it happened.
Kyle Dutcher led off the 9th by grounded sharply to first. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. dove and knocked it down, picked it up, and threw to the covering Julian Merryweather...but it wasn't in time. Infield single, which extended Dutcher's hitting streak to 30 games. Man on first, no outs, still down by 5. But then Javier Baez walked. Juan Soto singled to right, scoring Dutcher. 6-2, runners on first and second, no outs. Then Miguel Cabrera blooped a single just in front of the left fielder Gurriel Jr. Bases loaded, tying run at the plate, no outs. Now the impossible seemed possible. But, Spencer Torkelson struck out. Now, bases loaded, 1 out, Eric Haase at the plate. Eric Haase does not hit right handers well. He was just 3-17 with 1 home run against them this season. Plus, he doesn't run all that well. Both Victor Reyes, and Willi Castro were on the bench. Both hit right handers better.
But, Hinch rolled the dice. "I figured, we were down by 4. The chances of stringing together 2 or 3 hits was probably pretty slim. We needed a big fly. When Eric connects, it usually goes a long way. I figured it was our best chance"
He was right.
With a 2-2 count, Blue Jay's closer Jordan Romano hung a curve ball, and Haase didn't miss it, sending it deep into the upper deck in left field, 400 feet away, just inside the foul pole for a game tying grand slam. The improbable happened, yet again. Tie game. 6-6. Ross Stripling would come on and get out of the inning with the game still tied. but the Tigers still had the momentum.
Michael Fulmer went out in the bottom of the 9th, and struck out the side. You could tell the Blue Jays were deflated. In the top of the 10th, with the ghost runner on second, Kyle Dutcher laced a double into right field, giving the Tigers a 7-6 lead. Stripling got the next two hitters out, but then Miguel Cabrera, in the midst of a renaissance season, hit a 2 run home run into the left field seats, giving the Tigers a 9-6 lead. Gregory Soto then went out and struck out the side in the bottom of the 10th, securing the most improbable win of the Tigers season to this point.
You had to see it to believe it.

CABRERA SAC FLY LEADS TIGERS OVER BLUE JAYS
The Tigers jumped out to a 2-0 lead, saw it evaporate, then scored late to beat the Blue Jays, 3-2 Friday night in Toronto. Miguel Cabrera knocked in the go ahead run in the top of the 9th on a sac fly to right, and Gregory Soto got the Jays out 1-2-3 in the bottom of the 9th, to earn his 39th save of the season.
Kyle Dutcher led off the game with his 28th home run of the season. Spencer Torkelson gave the Tigers a 2-0 lead in the 5th, with his 35th homer of the year, a solo shot to left. The Blue Jays got a run back in the bottom of the 5th, on a solo home run by Mark Chapman, his 21st of the year. Cavan Biggio tied it in the 6th with his 4th home run of the season.
Casey Mize started for the Tigers, and went 7 strong innings, allowing just the 2 runs on 5 hits, with 5 strikeouts and a walk. He didn't figure in the decision. Lucas Sims, acquired yesterday from the Reds, pitched a perfect 8th inning, to earn the win, his second of the season, first with the Tigers.
Yusei Kikuchi started for the Jays, and went 7 innings, allowing 2 runs on 5 hits, with 6 strikeouts and a walk. Bowden Francis took the loss for the Jays.
The Tigers and Jays will play the final game of the series tomorrow afternoon at 3pm. Kevin Gausman will start for the Jays. Tiger manager A.J. Hinch said this game will be a "bullpen game," as the scheduled starter Matt Manning was traded to the Reds on Thursday, and he doesn't want to have to start someone on short rest. There was some thought about calling up someone to start the game, but because Mize and Eduardo Rodriguez were able to pitch through the 7th inning in the last two games, the bullpen is in good enough shape to piece together the game.
