LIONS 32 EAGLES 16 BOX SCORE
With the offense struggling for much of the first half, the Lions needed their defense to step up. And step up they did.
The Lions limited the Eagles to just 247 total yards of offense, and forced 2 Jalen Hurts interceptions, one of which was returned for a touchdown.
Detroit jumped out to a 6-0 lead early in the 2nd quarter, on a pair of Austin Seibert field goals. The Eagles would take a 7-6 lead with 7:26 left in the half, on a Miles Sanders 6 yard run. But the Lions drove down the field on the ensuing drive, and capped it off with a D'Andre Swift 4 yard touchdown run for a 13-7 lead with 1:34 left in the half. The defense then forced a 3 and out to get the ball back, and Jared Goff drove them down the field before Seibert connected again, this time from 29 yards out, to put Detroit up 16-7.
Late in the 3rd Quarter, cornerback Amani Oruwariye jumped a route, picked off a Jalen Hurts pass, and took it 47 yards to the house for a 22-7 lead, igniting the Ford Field crowd. The Eagles would get to within 12 on a Jake Elliott 43 yard field goal.
Seibert would connect on his 4th field goal of the game with 4:40 remaining, to put the Lions up 25-10. On the ensuing drive, Aiden Hutcinson pressured Hurts, forcing an errant throw right to safety DeShon Elliott, who picked it off. The Lions would put the game away with a 1 yard touchdown run by Jamaal Williams, making it 32-10. The Eagles would get a late touchdown by Quez Watkins, on a 3 yard pass from Hurts.
Offensively, Jared Goff managed the game well. He wasn't spectacular, going 21-31 for 221 yards. He didn't make any mistakes though. The Lions gained 145 yards on the ground, with D'Andre Swift accounting for 99 yards on 21 carris. T.J. Hockenson led the way with 73 receiving yards.
Jalen Hurts completed 27 of 38 passes for 244 yards, with a touchdown and 2 interceptions. Though the Lions got just 2 sacks, they pressured him all game long. Aiden Hutchinson recorded a sack, and two tackles for loss in his first NFL game.
The Lions remain home next week, as they host the Washington Commanders. The Commanders beat the Jaguars in week 1 28-23. Carson Wentz threw 4 touchdown passes in his Washington debut.
