TIGERS CLOSE TO DEAL FOR MIKE TROUT
July 30, 2024
The Detroit Tigers are reportedly close to a deal with the Angels, that would send star outfielder Mike Trout to Motown. It is unclear what the return would be, but it would almost certainly have to be a package centered around prospect Max Clark, and Jackson Jobe. It is also unclear whether the Tigers were on the list of teams Trout gave that he would waive his no trade clause to.
Trout formally requested a trade yesterday.
ORIOLES, ASTROS DISCUSSING ALEX BREGMAN
July 30, 2004
The Baltimore Orioles and Houston Astros are discussing a trade involving third baseman Alex Bregman. The Orioles are 67-40, 5.5 games ahead of the Yankees in the A.L. East. The Astros have fallen to 47-59, and have already traded pitcher Justin Verlander to the Tigers earlier this month.
MIKE TROUT WANTS OUT OF LOS ANGELES, HAS GIVEN ANGELS LIST OF TEAMS HE WOULD ACCEPT A TRADE TO
July 29, 2024
Following the trade that sent Brandon Drury, and Taylor Ward to the Phillies, Superstar outfielder Mike Trout lashed out at the Angel's front office, and owner. "There is no path, no direction here. They just gave up. I want to win. I don't want any part in yet another re-build, re-tooling, or whatever they want to call it. I want out. I want a trade. I've given Perry (Minasian, Angels' GM) and Arte (Moreno, Angels' owner) a list of teams that I will accept a trade to.
Trout has a full no-trade clause, and could reject a trade to any team if he chooses. Giving the team a list of teams for which he would waive the clause, gives the Angels a chance to negotiate a deal with one of those teams. It is unclear what teams Trout had on the list, but, based on his comments about winning, speculation is that it could include teams like the Yankees, Dodgers, Braves, and possibly even the Orioles, Rangers, Cubs, and Tigers.
PHILLIES ACQUIRE DRURY AND WARD FROM ANGELS
July 29, 2024
The Philadelphia Phillies and Los Angeles Angels have agreed to a deal that will send 2B Brandon Drury, and OF Taylor Ward to the Phillies, in exchange for CF Johan Rojas, SP Andrew Painter, and SS Devin Saltiban.
In 97 games with the Angels, Drury was hitting .265 with 19 HR and 76 RBI (4th in the A.L.). Ward was hitting .242 with 16 HR and 45 RBI in 93 games. With Rojas going back to the Angels in the trade, it is expected that Brandon Marsh will move back to center field, with Ward becoming the primary left fielder. Drury will replace Bryson Stott (.217, 3 HR 25 RBI) as the primary second baseman, with Stott being relegated to the bench.
Rojas was hitting .217 with 8 HR and 33 RBI with the Phillies. He will likely become the regular centerfielder for the Angels, with Mickey Moniak moving to a corner outfield spot. Painter was the Phillies top prospect, and could be called up to the Angels before the end of the season.
DODGERS ACQUIRE ADAMES FROM BREWERS
July 25, 2024
The Los Angeles Dodgers have acquired shortstop Willy Adames from the Milwaukee Brewers, in exchange for shortstop Gavin Lux, and pitcher Gavin Stone.
Adames was hitting .247 with 27 home runs and 56 RBI with the Brewers. He is not only an upgrade offensively from Lux, but also a defensive upbrade. Lux hit .236 with 5 home runs and 24 RBI in 87 games with the Dodgers. Adamas, who is just 28 years old, will be a free agent at the end of the season.
BRAVES ACQUIRE BIEBER FROM GUARDIANS
July 25, 2024
The Atlanta Braves have bolstered their starting rotation by acquiring Shane Bieber from the Guardians. Bieber, who is in the last year of his contract, is having a down year, going 4-8 with a 4.99 ERA in 122 2/3 innings over 21 starts.
The Guardians will receive pitching prospect AJ Smith-Shawver, and infield prospect Cal Conley from the Braves. Smith-Shawver has been in Triple A all season long, but is expected to be re-called to the Guardians, to take Bieber's spot in the rotation.
TIGERS HAVE REPORTEDLY DISCUSSED MIKE TROUT WITH ANGELS
July 24, 2024
According to sources, the Detroit Tigers have reached out to the Angels regarding outfielder Mike Trout. The Angels reportedly are asking for a package including pitcher Casey Mize, along with prospects Jackson Jobe, and Max Clark, among others. The Tigers were unwilling to include Mize in any deal. Unless the asking price comes way down, any deal for Trout is unlikely.
This confirms earlier reports that the Tigers are in the market for a bat, even after having acquired Justin Verlander on Sunday. Detroit could now possibly switch focus to other players, though talks with the Angels could continue.
VERLANDER RETURNS TO DETROIT
July 21, 2024
Prior to today's game against the Blue Jays, the Detroit Tigers acquired starting pitcher Justin Verlander from the Houston Astros, in exchange for a package of prospects. With the Astros, Verlander was 8-5 with a 3.67 ERA in 130 innings over 20 starts. This is his second stint in Detroit, having pitched for the Tigers from 2005, until he was traded to the Astros in August of 2017.
The Astros will receive Pitching prospect Wilmer Flores, along with infield prospects Luke Gold, and Max Anderson. Flores was the 4th ranked prospect in the Tiger's organization.
DIAMONDBACKS WILL BE SELLERS AT DEADLINE
July 12, 2024
The Arizona Diamondbacks will be sellers at the trade deadline. The defending National League Champions have fallen to 10 games below the .500 mark (42-52) and 16 games behind the Dodgers in the A.L. West. They are 7 games out of a Wild Card spot.
Notable players that could be of interest to other clubs include First baseman Christian Walker (.250, 15 HR, 50 RBI), Third baseman Eugenio Suarez (.232, 12 HR, 48 RBI), and Outfielder Joc Pederson (.263, 10 HR, 41 RBI). Of the three, Walker and Pederson will be free agents at season's end, and are pure rentals, while Suarez is signed through 2025.
MARLINS TO SELL. BELL, ANDERSON AND BETHANCOURT AVAILABLE
July 8, 2024
The Miami Marlins are sellers at the deadline. The team announced that first baseman Josh Bell, shortstop Tim Anderson, and catcher Christian Bethancourt are all available. Bell is hitting .289 with 12 home runs and 36 RBI. Anderson is hitting .266 with 6 home runs and 29 RBI. Bethancourt is hitting .251 with 9 home runs and 28 RBI.
ASTROS PREFER TO EXTEND BREGMAN, BUT WILL LISTEN TO OFFERS
July 8, 2024
The Houston Astros appear to be sellers. They have fallen to 11 games behind the Rangers in the A.L. West, and 9 games out of a Wild Card spot. Alex Bregman is in the final year of his contract. The Astros prefer to sign him to an extension, but could make him available at the deadline, if no deal is reached. Bregman is currently hitting .268 with 11 home runs and 49 RBI. If made available, he would be one of the top position players available at the deadline.
Teams that could have a need at third base include the Yankees, Orioles, and Blue Jays.
KENTA MAEDA INJURY COULD ALTER TIGER'S TRADE DEADLINE APPROACH
July 5, 2024
UPDATE: Maeda has been placed on the 15 -day injured list. He is seeking a second opinion, but is expected to need UCL Reconstruction (Tommy John) surgery, and will miss the remainder of this season, and most of next year. Alex Faedo was recalled from Triple A Toledo.
Kenta Maeda left Thursday's game after four innings with elbow discomfort. The extent of the injury is unknown, but it is feared that there might be some UCL damage. He is set to undergo tests on Friday, to determine the extent of the injury, and the course of treatment. It is expected that he will be placed on the Injured List before tonight's game in Cincinnati. No replacement has been announced.
In 18 starts for the Tigers, Maeda was 8-2 with a 3.94 ERA in 105 innings. Reese Olson is expected to take Maeda's place in the rotation, for the time being. But, if Maeda is to be out for an extended period, it could cause the Tigers to shift focus to pitching at the deadline. Potential starting pitchers that could be available at the deadline include Cleveland's Shane Bieber, The Brewer's Jakob Junis, the Royal's Seth Lugo, and potentially the Astro's Justin Verlander, the Mets Luis Severino, the Cardinals Kyle Gibson, and the Red Sox's Nick Pivetta.
ASTROS COOULD MAKE VERLANDER AVAILABLE IF THEY FALL OUT OF CONTENTION
July 5, 2024
The Houston Astros could make Justin Verlander available, if they fail to get back into contention. The Astros (41-46) currently sit 9 games back of the Rangers in the A.L. West, and 6.5 back of the final Wild Card spot. Verlander is 7-5 with a 3.80 ERA in 116 innings this season. Verlander's contract could be an issue though, as he is signed through the end of next season at $43.3 million per year.
ORIOLES, YANKEES, TIGERS AMONG TEAMS THAT COULD BE LOOKING FOR BATS AT THE TRADE DEADLINE
July 5, 2024
The Baltimore Orioles, New York Yankees, and Detroit Tigers are among the contenders that could be looking for a lineup upgrade. The Orioles could seek help at second and/or third base. The Yankees appear to have a need at third base, and to a lessor extent, first base, where Anthony Rizzo has struggled this season (.186, 13, 39) having been dropped down to seventh in the order.
The Tigers appear to have a need in the outfield and/or DH. Mark Canha, acquired in the offseason via trade from Oakland, has been underwhelming (.236, 11, 38). The Tigers aren't specifically locked into a hitter that only plays the outfield though, as Kerry Carpenter, the DH on most nights, could move back to right field. Carpenter is hitting .274, with 10 home runs and 39 RBI.
BREWERS SHOPPING ADAMES
July 5, 2024
Word out of Milwaukee is that the Brewers are shopping shortstop Willy Adames. Adames, who is hitting .241, with 23 home runs and 49 RBI, will be a free agent at year's end. The Brewers are currently sitting at 35-54, 15 games behind the Cubs in the N.L. Central, and 10.5 games out of a Wild Card spot.
MIKE TROUT WOULD WAIVE NO-TRADE CLAUSE UNDER CERTAIN CONDITIONS
July 4, 2024
Angel's outfielder Mike Trout stated in an interview on Thursday (July 4th) that he would consider waiving his No-Trade clause under certain circumstances. He did not specify what those circumstances are. Though one could presume that he would want to go to a team with a really good chance at making a deep playoff run. The Tigers, Braves, Blue Jays, and Dodgers are teams that seem to have a potential need for an outfielder, and a decent to good shot at making a long playoff run.
Trout, who is currently hitting .285, with 23 home runs and 61 RBI, is signed through 2030, at $35.5 million per season. This would likely price him out of Toronto, and Atlanta, and make a deal with the Dodgers extremely unlikely. The Tigers payroll is just $140 million, but it is unknown how much salary ownership would be willing to take on.
The Angels currently sit at 37-49, 12.5 games behind the Rangers in the A.L. West, and 10 games out of a Wild Card spot.
July 31, 2024
Blue Jays acquired 3B Eugenio Suarez from the Diamondbacks for SP Brandon Barriera and RF Jace Bohrofen
