NCAA 11 vs. Madden 11 Quick Comparison
Posted on August 12, 2010 at 08:41 AM.
Graphics
Madden is very sharp and crisp. The colors are A LOT more vibrant and the player models are tighter than they are in NCAA. That doesn't mean Madden looks more "real" because it kind of has this over-saturated look - not cartoonish per say, but just an amplified reality. NCAA is a bit more muted and faded by comparison. In a way it makes the overall game look more realistic. The stadiums look fantastic in both games, but the crowds in NCAA are horrible PS1 style abominations. Madden's crowd is a little better. One of the biggest upgrades to both games is in the lighting. Wow. Madden looks incredible with varied degrees of different lighting. Bright days contribute very high contrast players on the field. The sun beams off white uniforms and casts dramatic shadows. Same goes for NCAA. NCAA also has a progressive lighting engine where Madden does not. Meaning that in the college game the sun moves across the sky as the game progresses.

Gameplay
Madden feels VERY offensive. Passing is a lot easier than it is in NCAA. I
think it has to do with the tight pass coverage in the college game. I
notice the Madden receivers get open a lot easier and the defense can be
fooled by moves and cuts. I was putting up big numbers in Madden last night.
Both in the air and on the ground. The one very BIG thing I notice is that
Madden's running and tackling is a lot easier than it is in NCAA. Blocking
is improved in both games. The biggest difference between the 2 games that I
see is with tackling and momentum. Madden still has that powerful forward
moving feel to it, where you will be running ahead and a tackle will start,
and you'll still get another 3 or 4 yards after impact - through spins and
shouldering and stumbling forward. In NCAA you pretty much go down near
where you are tackled with less dramatic forward movement. I think this
feels more realistic to me. I haven't seen any "Hulking" in the running game
in NCAA. There was still a little of that in Madden - but much less than
last year.

Locomotion
Both games are boasting about their new locomotion engines - the system that
drives realistic player movements and animations. Acceleration, cuts, turns,
strafing and juking are much improved in both games. You will especially
notice this in the running game. I have to say that locomotion feels better
in NCAA. Madden retains a little bit of an "arcade" feel when compared to
NCAA, but its not a game breaker by any means. I think NCAA just has the
best feeling gameplay in football to date.

Commentary
NCAA wins hands down. Gus Johnson is much better than Tom Hammond was in Madden 09/10, but there is still some weird issue with the sound production
that keeps the play by play sounding fragmented and jittery. Both games need
a boost in this department. You'll hear the same lines over and over again
in both games.

Presentation
This is a tough one. Both games have made HUGE leaps in 11. NCAA has ESPN
presentation. Madden uses NFL Network to springboard their look. Each uses
nice new wipes and replay cameras to frequently show the action in slow
motion. Madden has better cut scenes and sideline stuff. ESPN has better
editing of replays. Neither though have a blown out halftime/postgame show
like 2K5 did. : ( Madden's new "Game Flow" feature also gives that game a great looking presentation because it does away with those screen-filling menus.

Online
You cant beat NCAA's online dynasty. Madden has one as well, but NCAA lets
you post photos and video highlights to a website!!! I love that!

Overall I like both games. Madden looks amazing from moment to moment. I
think this could be the best graphics in sports gaming to date. But there is
something more "real" about NCAA.

Good read, nice fair comparisons. I haven't played NCAA, as I would have to import it for PS3, but i'm getting Madden on the 360, so i'm not too bothered.

Which do you think you will play the most? I know I would play Madden more as I love the NFL, not that big on the college game.

I'm actually starting to enjoy Madden 11 more since NCAA 11 spoiled me a bit. I think my comparing it to NCAA 11 was causing me to be overly critical of it. I've calmed down on that aspect and I'm finally to breath Madden all in for it's own merits.

Some of the things u mention I do/don't agree with. I still have a sticking point with blocking since NCAA 11, to me, is clearly better in that department but the biggest issues with blocking, for me, is how damn well the CPU STILL does it on All Pro. This has been an issue for years and I'm not sure the sliders are helping me or the CPU in aspects like this one. It's just hard as hell for me to get to the QB and most times, by the time I get to him, he gets off accurate, nick of time passes with some of them being WHILE HE'S GETTING HIT. NCAA doesn't have this problem as much. That's my biggest frustration with Madden 11 as well as the play action lack of blocking.

Any how, bout to get in some more NCAA and Madden. Peas.

I have to agree, how many years ago was 2k5 and we still don't have a highlight show recapping the games throughout the week?

First of all Bullitt im sorry you are tired of hearing about 2K5. I'm almost just as tired saying it, but the fact remains that it is impossible not to compare today's games to it simply because it remains the benchmark for presentation. I do play it from time to time to get my presentation fix.

That being said im loving this years Madden. The presentation is improved thanks to Game Flow. I love being able to watch FULL replays from various angles after almost every big play without fussing around with playcalling menus.

Overall I think i will play Madden more simply because it is NFL. But NCAA just feels like the better playing game. It also has amazing online dynasty stuff - uploading highlights and stories to the website. Both games offer great entertainment. The fundamentals are pretty much down for both. Now they just need some polish moving forward.

I too am looking forward to the reinstatement of the classic pre-snap controls. I wont be starting my franchise until they arrive. I hardly use the Strategy Pad just because there is not enough time to do it.
