A month in the books and we miraculously still have a few patches of hair left on top of the ol’ hollow dome. Between the head scratching, hair-pulling, and head smashing into the ceiling from our 2" vertical jump of excitement off the futon – the first month of fantasy baseball has many ways of aging us.
Along with the black-list we’ve mentally created for fantasy eternity there have also been the steady contributors who have lived up to expectation and some surprise performers. They all have a way of balancing each other out to help keep our sanity.
Personally, I’m the guy who wants the bad news first and the good to balance it out. So in the spirit of my emotional selfishness we take a gander at April’s collection of those that weren’t.
And I don’t intend to let ‘em off the hook!
Starting Pitchers
NYY, Chien-Ming Wang
The Line: 6 IP, 0 Wins, 3 Losses, 2 K, 34.50 ERA, 4.83 WHIP
A broken Wang has left the Yankees reeling in mediocrity to start the 2009 campaign. Much to our mercy, Wang is on the 15-day DL. The culprit: foot tightness which leads to hip tightness which leads to mechanics problems. The foot bone’s connected to the knee bone; the knee bone’s connected to the hip bone. Oh, and the hip bone’s connected to the B.S. bone.
Honorable Mention: BOS, Daisuke Matsuzaka; ARI, Brandon Webb; COL, Aaron Cook; PHI, Cole Hamels
Relief Pitchers
NYY, Damaso Marte
The Line: 4 IP, 0 Wins, 1 Loss, 6 K, 15.19 ERA, 2.25 WHIP
The Yankees’ pitching woes continue with Marte who also finds himself on the DL. New York may want to up the pay of their team doctor as Marte (tendonitis) joins another setup man, Brian Bruney on the DL.
Honorable Mention: LAA, Kevin Jepsen; KC, Kyle Farnsworth; LAA, Scot Shields
Catcher
CHC, Govany Soto
The Line: .158 AVG, 4 R, 0 HR, 3 RBI
Last year’s rookie of the year seems as if he has nothing left to prove. Chalk it up to the sophomore slump. Lucky for Soto, catcher isn’t a huge production position in fantasy baseball. However, the Cubs need an extra production guy to up the win total and compete for a division crown.
Honorable Mention: TB, Dioner Navarro; MIL, Jason Kendall; ATL, Brian McCann
Corner Infield
OAK, Jason Giambi
The Line: .213 AVG, 11 R, 1 HR, 10 RBI
Without performance enhancing supplements to aid him in his old age, Giambi may need to buy a few cases of Centrum Silver. The A’s slugger is well past his prime and struggles to shake the day-to-day injury status tag. What happened to the Holliday-Giambi slugfest?
Honorable Mention: Alex Gordon, KC.; OAK, Eric Chavez; ATL, Casey Kotchman; CHC, Derrek Lee
Middle Infield
MIL, J.J. Hardy
The Line: .160 AVG, 6 R, 3 HR, 7 RBI
Many of the fantasy pundits claim that Hardy always gets off to a slow start and recovers from there. I took the bait and grabbed Hardy in my draft and let him consistently bring down my fantasy team’s batting average. Eventually there comes a time to take the training wheels off and let a guy sink or swim. Hardy continues to sink but it’s going to be on someone else’s ship.
Honorable Mention: Alexi Casilla, MIN; ARI, Stephen Drew; PHI, Jimmy Rollins
Outfield
SD, Brian Giles
The Line: .158 AVG, 3 R, 1 HR, 12 RBI
Giles’ career numbers against righties is more than one hundred points higher than his current numbers thus far this season. Giles is another guy that parallels J.J. Hardy’s performance or lack thereof. Again, don’t listen to the “he’s bound to balance out" argument. Mr. Giles is well past his prime so don’t expect his average to climb much higher than .250 this year.
Honorable Mention: OAK, Matt Holliday; STL, Rick Ankiel; LAD, Juan Pierre; TB, B.J. Upton

I suppose I didn't state that very clearly. Thanks for reading. Letting Hardy go was painful!

Oh alright. In that case, my praise is there for you again
I don't have Soto this year, I drafted him last year, sad to see him struggling.
