Tebow's Arm Issue: Still the Wrong Angle Stuck
Posted on July 23, 2012 at 11:16 AM.

The Tim Tebow saga has run full circle back to main issue of his post-college NFL workouts. The topic of the day: Tebow's throwing motion is too long and slow. By fixing it, he hopes to speed up his release and become a legitimate starter.

The reality, however, is that the only angle worth changing is that of our perspective on Tebow as a legitimate NFL starter.

Changing his delivery isn't the magic pill. Nor are his throwing mechanics necessarily that big of a deal. The player reading the defense, deciding where to throw, and finishing the throw -- that is where Tim Tebow must improve.

Give Tebow credit. He's a phenomenal human being by all accounts. He's an inspirational piece to any team he belongs to, and he's been associated with winning more times than not. Plus, it's hard to fault a guy for doing anything -- regardless of how monumental or miniscule it may be -- to improve one's ability.

But please do us all a favor and keep him in perspective. Yes, Tebow is working with Tom House who has tutored the likes of Alex Smith, Drew Brees, and Tom Brady. But to in no way did House make these quarterbacks who they are. Once at this level a few tweaks are possible, but for the most part you are who you are.

Tim Tebow is becoming the aw-shucks good ol' boy we root for to be more than his abilities. But we need not look any farther than his past to see who he is and that he's likely never going to be a good NFL quarterback.

Tebow has been groomed as a spread option quarterback nearly his entire playing career. His jump to the NFL and the pro-style offenses are the equivalent of learning a new game. It's a whole new way of playing and -- more importantly -- a new way of thinking.

You see, it's not his arm that is holding Tim Tebow back. It's his mind, his muscle memory. He's trained for the 100-meter dash for eight years and now is being commissioned to run the mile. But how often does the mile-runner work on his block starts?

While not impossible, the likelihood is that it's not probable for Tebow to be a successful drop-back quarterback in the NFL. It's the reason the New York Jets are looking to get him on the field in wildcat situations. They understand exactly what they're getting.

In the meantime, Tebow will keep on working his mechanics and his release. He hopes it makes a difference; that somehow the change will lead to his dream of being a legitimate NFL starter.

Will Tim Tebow ever be a legitimate NFL quarterback?

Obviously he isn't your prototype NFL QB with a high fast release. Though he brings certain intangibles, to the table, that a lot of other starting NFL QB's don't. Will he ever be a legitimate QB in the NFL? In my honest opinion, no I don't think so. Will he be a successful QB that can get the job done his way? Absolutely.

it depends on what you mean by legitimate. if you mean winning games, he's already done that. he's won as many playoff games as Tony Romo, and he was on a worse team. if you mean throwing for tons of yards, no it wont ever throw like a NFL QB.

The NFL is changing. Just look at Cam Newton and RG3. they trow better than Tebow but they were in very similar systems in college, heck at one time Newton was Tebow's backup.

i agree with pretty much everything said in the blog as well as the two comments. what you have to consider is basically this: does tim tebow even have to become more of a prototypical QB? there's no question that the NFL we all know, and maybe love, but definitely consume, is a PASSING LEAGUE today. but great minds of the nfl such as jon gruden have hinted at the game taking a step towards the college formula as far as running offenses, which has been evident at times. tim tebow needs to become more efficient and effective as a passer, no doubt. will he ever be a hall of famer or even a pro bowler? highly unlikely. but as THE YAMA said, he already has found success, and i believe he will continue to do so.

People are trying to put Tim Tebow in a round hole. When he is a Square. His accuracy definitely needs to get better, but he does the one thing no one can coach you to be and that is a winner. Telling him to be a drop back passer is like telling Brandon Jacobs to be Ray Rice. Will he succeed if you try to make him Brady? Absolutely not. Can he succeed if he becomes a better Tebow? Yes.

To post #2 Comparing Cam Newton and RGBIII is not fair. Cam and RGB can make the professional throws, Cam and RGB were more of a read QB and then take off, where as Tebow was just a PURE designed run play.

Also realize how good RGB and Newton had to be Baylor had NO DEFENSE, and neither did Auburn the year they won it, was strictly All on them.

Tebow had a defense his whole 4 years there, with most guys ready for the pros.

Now to the question, Can he become a Legit Quarterback? I'm from NY I say NO, cannot fix bad arm mechanics this late in life, that had to be done when he was in J.R H.S!

One thing he does bring to the Jets is a winning attitude, and a bit of class.. something they've lacked for many years. Against certain teams, Tebow will get many plays and DO WELL.

STarting QB that makes NFL throws?... Without a team switching their offense for you like Denver did.. NO

If Shawn Marion could be successful at shooting the ball with his ugly motion, then Tebow can be successful at passing with his throwing motion. You have to find what works best for yourself, and never change your character just to please others. The truly great players don't fit a mold, they make their own.

There's a difference Shawn Marion's shots WENT IN. Tebow's passes sometimes fall way short or way too long, even on a simple play.

Say a simple out route, if Tebow misses that, it's the same as Marion shooting an air ball from 3 feet AWAY. He wouldn't be allowed near a court.

No matter how ugly the shot, as long as it goes in. Same thing with an ugly pass, as long as it hits it's intended target.. it's fine.

Not when the ball skids 3 feet in front of the receiver, or 4 feet over his head.

Like I said I'm from NY, Jets and a Giants fan, I think Tebow can bring a few things to the table, he has heart and loves the game, will take a hit for the team.

NOOOOOO! Im sick oof this dude getting a MILLION and 1 tries to be a starting NFL QB! What about all the other winning college QB's that NEVER got a chance to prove they can play?? Charlie Ward, Dennis Dixon, Troy Smith (49ers never really believed in him, and the Ravens only play Flacco cause Troy got sick and Flacco was a high pick), etc etc. these guys have been given limited opportunities to be NFL Starters and they can spin the ball 10 times better than Tebow. The league is slowly losing its racist tendancies toward Black QB's with Cam & RG3 but there are countless others that can play too. look at all the good black QB's in college and how when they get to the pros coaches and gm's force them to change their positions!! If Tebow was Black he would have NEVER been given the chance to play QB...ALL of you know Im right!!!

man, you're several years too late with that. you wanna talk about racism in football, not just the nfl? then talk about coaching and management positions, that's where race issues are still decades behind.

You can see the double standard in how he is judged when compared to someone like Michael Vick (for just a moment forget their off field perceptions an concentrate on their football skills).. Both are run first QB's with lots of athleticism an a flair for making plays out of nothing, both left handed who do better rolling left to throw, an both lacking consistent accuracy from the pocket.. The difference I see in their perceptions is that Vick is routinely told that he needs to sacrifice the best part of his game in order to have a chance to win (an remember that around the same age that tebow is now Vick was playing in a conference championship game) meanwhile tebow has won despite some of the same things that analysts have been critical of Vick for in his entire career and he is being lauded for it which to me is sorta confusing... It's the first time I can recall an nfl qb being praised more for his intangibles an character than for his ability
