BCS Out, Playoffs In Stuck
Posted on June 26, 2012 at 11:17 PM.

All the complaining finally paid off. The hated BCS is dead as we know it and a four-team college football playoff is coming in 2014.

Like an argument with the world's most stubborn parents, we knew we were right, but the BCS check-cashers wouldn't listen. We weren't speaking their language apparently. We kept talking in common sense -- or cents -- and BCS brass was looking for common dollars.

Not surprisingly, the "biggest questions" moving forward revolve around who gets paid and how much. While a selection committee will be in charge of picking the top four teams to make the playoff, how that process works is yet to be determined. And the distribution of income among the conferences will likely be debated down to the last minute. Money was the lynch pin that finally broke through, and dollar signs will be the last detail to be ironed out.

As the school presidents and conference commissioners came to a consensus, a few things appear to be clear moving forward.
  • The general lineup of bowl games will remain intact with the championship game going to the highest bidder. In other words, money still talks.
  • Teams will be judged based on win-loss records, strength of schedule, head-to-head results, and if they are a conference champion.
  • The new agreement starts in 2014 and runs through the 2025 season. (Is that too long to commit to a new system without room for flexibility?)
  • Six bowl games will rotate as hosts to the semifinal games. The championship game will be played at a neutral site.
  • The semifinals will likely be played on New Year's Eve or New Years Day.
  • The national championship will follow on the first Monday of January that is at least six days after the semifinal games.
Questions still remain though.

What if change is needed long before 2025 comes around? And why 2014? Why not sooner?

But finally -- and perhaps more importantly -- instead of four, why not an eight team playoff? When looking at a pool of over 120 teams it can be difficult to compare resumes to arrive at a clear-cut group of four teams.

But as Virginia Tech president and chair of the presidential oversight committee, Charles Sterger stated today, "A four-team playoff doesn't go too far; it goes just the right amount."

Anything beyond the BCS mess is a positive move. We have our playoff and for that we are winners. But how big is the win? A four-team playoff is a victory, but not too far? Perhaps not far enough.

What are your reactions to the announcement? Did you ever think this day would come?

A four-team playoff is a step in the right direction. But I want a eight-team playoff, as soon as possible.

"Billions" in revenue.... amazing. They should have listened sooner.

I'm excited for it. I think a four-team playoff helps maintain the integrity of the regular season. If the playoffs included a ton of teams (over ten) then the excitement of every game counting in the regular season would be diminished some. At least, that's how I feel about it.

I don't like it. Call me crazy but I think there will be just as much controversy with this system as there is today.

Perhaps we all need a better defintion of what "National Champion" means. In basketball, its not who had the better season, its about who was hot come tournament time. Is this the same defintion we want with football? If so, fine, lets make it blatantly clear. I actually felt like Bama winning it last year was kinda odd. They had their chance to beat LSU the first time, and they failed. LSU by far had the better season and with the old measuring stick, were far and away the best team all year, and thus, national champions.

To me, I really could care less who wins the national title. I miss the days of having a January bowl game be the ultimate goal (when there were only a handfull) - and by the end of the day, you know who the best team of that season was.

Finally, if the tournament winner is going to be the new "national title", then 4 teams is too small IMO. 16 teams would really be needed as why should the cutoff be 4 (what about #'s 5 and 6). Or maybe a two loss team that just got over injuries is rolling but ranked #7? Etc....

The money is still designed to go to the power Conf's.

Non-Power schools will still have to achieve standards not placed on the Power Conf's as a way to keep them from millions of dollars.

Keep in mind that Power Schools have always gone out the way to not schedule a Non-Power school that could possibly upset them because it's a lose-lose for them.

College Football is the only college sport where there is "NO" opportunity for a cinderella story because of the methods used to stream the $$$ to certain Conf's/schools.

If a Non-Power school goes undefeated against the schools that were willing to play them and Power-Conf schools refuse to schedule them because it's a lose-lose making their Strength of Schedule to be weak,

How does that Non-Power school have a chance at the 4 team Playoff Championship Selection?

Answer is....

They don't!!!

It's still the same Exclusive money grab, just with a different color.
