The Art of the Cam Newton Humble-brag
Posted on June 5, 2012 at 03:07 PM.

Remember that cool Friday night in 2001?

You dominated the gridiron with 24 tackles, eight sacks, and five forced fumbles. It was an awesome night for sure, but there was a lingering ache you had to get off your chest.

Luckily you memorialized your pain in a journal entry.

Quote:
“Dear Diary,

I guess I’m pretty pumped we won. I mean, it’s great and all, but I wish we could have at least scored 80 points, not just fifty-six.

And I thought it was pretty cool when Johnny “Left feet” Johnson scored a touchdown on my fourth forced fumble of the night. I’m happy I could be a part of that for him. I’m sure he’ll never forget what an awesome teammate I am, but I should have got him at least two more.

So glad you could listen to me,

Stevie “Sliced-Bread” Henderson”
Still struggling with the agony of that night?

Cam Newton can relate.

In an article at Yahoo! Sports, Newton declared himself a “bad teammate” in 2011. And what improprieties did the young phenom fess-up to? Selfishness? Back-stabbing? Wife-swapping?

Not quite. Try, not-good-enough-to-overcome-teammates-who-are-worse-than-me syndrome.

"I'll be the first one to tell you, the pouting and the moping, I kind of overdid it…I was a bad teammate. I shut off to some people who gave unbelievable effort. … That's where I have to mature," stated Newton.

Veteran receiver Steve Smith clarified the difficulties that exposed Cam’s character flaws in regard to being so much more awesome than everyone else on the team.

Added Smith, “Cam was angry because he thought he could and should make every play. He has to realize you can't do it all yourself.”

Humble-bragging for another person? That’s got to be up there with dropping a fake apology.

That type of work can earn you a spot on Grantland’s Humblebrag Hall of Fame.

Cam Newton. The man that took his team from a 2-14 record to 6-10 in his rookie season – with little to no offseason team preparation.

His teammates are surely growing tired of his winning ways. When will he ever learn it’s not good enough to be the most electrifying QB on the planet?

We expect more.

Nothing short of a touchdown pass to himself will do.

Would you want Cam Newton as the QB of your favorite team?

Most overrated player in the league, he had 2 FANTASTIC games, but as the season went along, everyone did what they did to him in college. Dont less his WR run 50 yards past you without covering him, dont fall for his god awful fakes, and press his WRs at the line, he had such a great 1st 2games, it was almost impossible for him to throw for less than 4,000 yards bc he had about 1000 in 2 games, all he had 2 do was average 200 a game and he would have had 4,000. He dosent throw guys open, and he cant beat pres coverage with his arm, he has to have open guys for him not to run, instead of throwing were his guy will be, since he dosent know how, he just runs, you stop that, you win.

You sir, are either an idiot, or have never seen him play. You're making the same assumptions ppeople made last year before teh draft. I can tell you've never seen him play, he doesn't throw guys open? what? He has one of the best deep balls in the game, in fact, he lead the league in deep completions(20+ yards) as a ROOKIE, by a pretty wide margin. more than brady, brees, rodgers. He also lead the league in deep pass completion percentage, another incredible feat. You are clearly biased and don't liek the kid, he threw for 850 his first two games(not 1000), that's still passing for 3200 yards in 14 games, still a pretty damn good rate for a rookie. That's still 230 pass yards per game, that's above average for an NFL QB, much less a ROOKIE. You're a fool, my friend. His god awful jukes? tell the SEC(the best division in college) and NFL how "god awful" his jukes were. The guy ran for 705 yards, obviously he has a pretty sick juke. You don't juke NFL defenders with a god awful juke, especially when you're a giant target at 6'6 260. I do'nt know what else to say to you man, he clearly didn't need open guys to not run, he stood tall in the pocket, in fact, people started to say he was staying in the pocket TOO long and he wasn't trusting his running ability enough, proof that you are talking out of your butt and don't actually know. He can clearly beat press coverage because one of his most succesful routes was the quick slant to steve smith and jeremy shockey. You're making assumptions because he's a running QB(among other physical traits..) when you clearly never saw him play. He also passed for 60% ad had 35 total TD's...For some perspective, the previous rookie passing record was peyton manning 3700 pass yards...27 tds and 28 interceptions....and no rush yards...yeah you're an idiot.

I live in NC, and ive seen him play, he cant throw anyone open, and i wont be surprised if he dosent throw for 3,000 yards next season, and i didnt say juke, i said fake as in pump//play action so whos the idiot now! He after 2 games, there was no way he wouldnt throw for 4,000 or even 4500 bc he had to average just 200 yards a game, and backup in the league could have done that, hell NE has 2 that could, and a few other teams that could average that as rookies. And lets be honest, he didnt win in college his DEFENSE DID, he was afraid to throw the ball!!!!! Ive never seen someone so lucky in all my life, the reason he had so many big plays in college and last season is bc NO ONE COVERED HIS WR!!!! Go back and actually watch the tapes, most his so called great throws are to uncovered WRs, there uncovered bc they dont think he could hit even a WR left open by 50 yards, and to the ******* who said hes one of the best deepthrowers in the league hasnt watched him play, or any REAL great QB, and just excepts the ball QBs b4 him as GOOD!!!!!

What will be the impact of having an entire offseason to prepare? Could he put up even better numbers? And do you guys thing his legacy depends on the team winning games?

# 8 spliffy8 @ Jun 6
Yeah, I already did the math for you pal, so you can't lie anymore. he had 850 yards his first 2 games, that does not make it "almost impossible" to pass for 4000 yards. that's a ridiculous statement, no matter how well you do in just 2 games, it does not make it easy to pass for 4000 yards. That being said, 4051 minus 850 is still 3200 yards, 3200 divided by the remaining 14 games is still 230 yards a game. That's a ton for a rookie, and more than the average starting QB in the NFL. so no, you're wrong. If any back up in the league could pass for 200 yards(when it was 230 yards anyway), then why can starting QB's only pass for 220 yards on average? idiot. You say any rookie could do what he did? THEN WHY HAS NO ROOKIE EVER DONE IT?!?! He didn't win in college? his defense did?!?! HE SCORED 52 TOUCHDOWNS! WHAT??!?!?! seriously, I want some o what you're smoking, man. He has the HIGHEST PASSER RATING IN NCAA HISTORY AND YOU SAY HE WAS AFRAID TO THROW THE BALL? it's already been proven 90% of his runs were DESIGNED RUNS in college, he almost never ran on pass plays. and if he was afraid to pass, how did he destroy the rookie pass record? you make o sense, wahtsoever. No one covered his WR's? wow, what a terrible excuse, it perhaps looked that way because he was in fact THROWING PEOPLE OPEN. He took an offense that 0 pro players ad made them elite. College receivers are always more open because the defenders aren't as good, but that doesn't explain his incredible success as a rookie vs. NFL secondaries. the guy can clearly throw guys open when he lead the LEAGUE IN DEEP PASSES, MORE THAN BRADY BREES, RODGERS. DO I HAVE TO SAY IT AGAIN!??!I GUESS NO ONE WAS GUARDING HIS RECEIVERS AGAIN? IT DOESN'T MATTER WHO SAID HE'S ONE OF THE DEEP PASSERS IN THE LEAGUE BECAUSE IT'S A FACT, HE LEAD THE LEAD IN DEEP PASSES!!!!! it's not an opinion, it's fact. what's a REAL great QB? a white guy who can't run a 4.5 40 time? that's what I thought. quit blindly hating the guy, you have no clue what you're talking about and making ish up.

# 9 spliffy8 @ Jun 6
oh yeah, all while devouring one of the most complex playbooks in the league with no offseason...you're dumb.

# 10 spliffy8 @ Jun 6
you're also not considering how idiotic your statements are. "after throwing for 422 and 432 yards in his FIRST TWO NFL STARTS, it was EASY to get 4000 yards". you're seriously ******** man. No one has EVER passed for 400+ yards in their first two starts. you can't take that away from him and say it was "easy" because he did that. ridiculous. If Tom Brady didn't throw for 500 yards in his first start, he wouldn't have had 500 yards passing, it was easy after that. If Stafford didn't throw for 550 in his last start, he wouldn't have had 5000 yards passing, it was easy to get there after that...

@bmj2k7 It's obvious that you dislike Cam Newton for reasons not related to football. I just watched this video of Cam's rookie highlights ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L4uXmU2T0Yc ) and there are several occasions where he "threw receivers open" or he threw the ball where only the receiver could catch it. How do you fault a guy for throwing to the open receiver. He got a lot of yards because he threw to the guy that was open. That's typically how good quarterbacks play football
