Tigers Dig The Long Ball:
Hunter Saves The Day!
Game 4: April 11th, 2014
Detroit Tigers @ New York Mets
Game 1 of 3
Early on, there were a plethora of popouts for both sides. Pitching definitely dominated the majority of this game.
After what felt like a cheap run by the Mets in the bottom of the second, QBerry hit a HR to left field on an outside 2seam fb in the top of the third to answer.
Pena absolutely smoked a homer to right center first pitch of the inning. It was a hanging curveball and he was ready for it.
Mets make double switch in top 7 to sub Gee out. We go down quickly after that and in the bottom they almost tie it up again on a deep fly ball down the line in right field.
Bottom 8: Ike Davis HR to left, first pitch sinker outside at the knees... ugh I brought in Duane Below for lefty/lefty matchup and still he jacked one.
Torii Hunter PH for Below against Johann Santana in the top of the 10th. Hunter's first AB of the season was the go-ahead HR in extra innings. What a wily ol' vet.
Austin Jackson decided he wanted to try to seal it and takes Santana yard as well.
But wait! There's more... With 2 outs in the top of the 10th and a 2 run lead, Prince Fielder decides to join the HR party. He puts a bow on this game with a solo shot to center field.
Joaquin Benoit came in to attempt to get the save, but only got 1 out, gave up 1 hit and had to endure an error by Jhonny Peralta. Luckily Smyly came in and got the final two outs for us en route to his first save of the season.
Game Highlights:
In minor league action:
AAA Toledo Mud Hens lost 5-10 to the Louisville Bats. Starter gave up 7 runs in 3.1 innings. Seems like AAA starting rotation might have some issues this season. But it's nice to see another solid offensive performance from Argenis Diaz (2 for 5, 2 RBI). While not recording a hit, Andres Olivo drew 2 walks, stole a base, and scored once.
AA Erie Sea Wolves lost 5-7 to the Akron Aeros. Only 4 of the 7 runs were earned. Poor defensive play it seems, had 2 errors. Again, the bright side... Young guys hitting well: SS Fred Ragland (2 for 4, 2R, BB), RF Steven Karlic (3 for 5, 2B, 1R, 2RBIs) and Brock Keisler (3 for 5, 1R, 2RBIs)
Olivo, Ragland and Keisler are top 50 prospects, so hopefully they'll mature into talented guys. Ill definitely be keeping an eye on them, especially Ragland because I hate the way Peralta is playing right now.
