The New York Yankees hit lucky number seven after defeating the Seattle Mariners 9-0 Saturday night. However, that is not the only thing they were lucky with as castaway Bartolo Colon continues to solidify the back-end of the rotation. Mariner hitters were clueless all night as Colon pitched a complete game shutout giving up only three hits.
The night started out with one-two-three inning from Seattle's young righthander Michael Pineda. On the Mariner's side of the inning Ichiro blasted a shot to left-center field netting him a double, but Colon had other plans. He prompted an infield pop-up and two strikeouts in the inning.
"I felt good tonight," Colon said."My fastball was working on both sides of the plate. I was able to use my slider a little more than usual for strike to keep them off balance."
Pineda cruised through the second and third, however he ran into trouble in the fourth after Yankee first baseman homered to start the scoring and from there he added another two-run home run in the sixth. Brett Gardner collected three hits, Alex Rodriguez collected two hits including a home run in the ninth.
"It was great to see the guys hitting and scoring runs tonight," Yankees Manager Joe Girardi said. "We've been struggling as of late with getting guys on base and plating them, but I feel like we are heading in the right direction now."
The Yankees look to sweep their fourth straight series tomorrow night as Ivan Nova (7-2, 4.16) takes on David Pauley (3-3, 4.21) at Safeco Field tomorrow night.
