A crushing loss to the crosstown rivals New York Mets in yesterday's game, made tonight's game a peculiar match for the New York Yankees. Needing a win from a struggling pitching staff, AJ Burnett threw a masterful game going six strong innings collecting seven strikeouts while only giving up one walk and two earned runs. It's the type of performance the Yankees needed from one of its top of the rotation guys.
"It was nice to have the bats going tonight," said Burnett. "It's always easier pitching with a lead."
Speaking of hitting, Alex Rodriguez who has been in a season-long slump might be showing signs of life after his three-hit performance. His ability to get on-base and drive runs home are crucial to the Yankees success while the pitching figures itself out.
"I saw the ball real well tonight," Rodriguez said. "I was great having the guys in front of me give me opportunities to hit them in."
Yankees Manager Joe Girardi gave Nick Swisher the night off and inserted Andruw Jones into the lineup, who had success at the plate after catapulting a ball into the LF seats to start off the eighth. In only 19 games, Jones has hit six home runs, giving the Bronx Bombers a viable option off the bench after former Yankee Marcus Thames left via free agency.
The Yanks face the Mets tomorrow in the rubber match of the three game series with Bartolo Colon (3-2) taking the hill against Mike Pelfrey (1-5).
