The New York Yankees came into the season not knowing whether the back of their rotation would hold up. However, Freddy Garcia has been very good so far in pinstripes continuing to pitch well against the Baltimore Orioles. Over six innings he gave up only five hits and one earned run while striking out four.

The Yankees were stymied by Bret Bergensen all night and statistically outdueled Garcia by pitching 6.2 innings giving up only one run while striking out six. In a battle of the bullpens, New York employed the services of Joba, Logan, Ayala and Rivera to get the last 12 outs of the game.

"We are pleasantly surprised with Freddy," said Yankee Manager Joe Girardi. "Our bullpen did an excellent job tonight shutting down their offense."

Mild-mannered Brett Gardner was ejected from the game in the 4th after arguing a call at first. Replay showed he was, in fact, out. The play moved Martin over to second, who was later stranded in the inning.

"I was out of line," Gardner admitted. "Luckily, the boys pulled out a win because I feel like I let them down by letting my temper get the best of me."

The Yankees take the two-game series and will host the New York Mets in the Subway series over the weekend. CC Sabathia, who has struggled in the early going, will take the hill against Chris Capuano who is having issues of his own in the young season.
