Through 44 games through the season the New York Yankees trail both the powerful Boston Red Sox and the crafty Tampa Bay Rays in the standings. Coming into the season, the pitching staff was a known concern for the Pinstripers. However, they couldn't have expected both CC Sabathia and Phil Hughes to struggle like they are. Because of his struggles, Hughes has landed on the DL, while Sabathia continues to try to find his stride. The bullpen has also been very shaky with Joba, Logan and Soriano each having an ERA up over four.

As for the the hitting, Derek Jeter and Alex Rodriguez have struggled mightily in the early going to the tune of .221 and .210 batting averages, respectively. However, Curtis Granderson, Russell Martin and Andruw Jones have picked up some of the slack. Even Cano is hitting a modest .257 right now.
