The New York Yankees selected Buster Adams, 18, in the 13th round of the 2012 draft with hopes that he would help fill out the roster. His potential wasn't that of a first-round selection, but what little potential scouts said he possessed, he made sure he made good on.
He ascended through the lower parts of the Yankees' farm system rather quickly. He dominated the NY-Penn League, with the Staten Island Yankees and was promoted to the South Atlantic League (SAL) where he was assigned to the Charleston Riverdogs. He pitched alongside other Bronx-hopefuls, and more well-known prospects like Jose Campos, Caleb Cotham, Bryan Mitchell, Gary Sanchez, Tyler Austin, and Mason Williams. It was easy to see the reason Adams was overlooked.
He ended the year with the Riverdogs and pitched to a 3.14 ERA (3.24 FIP) with his low 90's fastball, plus changeup, and average curveball. Scouts began recognizing he had a little more potential than they previously thought. He located his pitches, especially his fastball, on the corners very well and used his changeup to deceive lefties and his curveball to freeze righties. Seemingly overnight, his star has brightened and have forced the Yankees to move him up to the next level, Double-A Trenton.
The Thunder opened the season with a few of their biggest prospects like the aforementioned Gary Sanchez, as well as fellow catcher, JR Murphy and centerfielder Slade Heathcott. The parent club decided to hide Brennen Boesch and Lyle Overbay at the AA level and together they serve as the Thunder's main power supply.
Meanwhile, the pitching staff is stocked with plenty of worthwhile prospects such as Jose Campos (closer), Corey Black, Vidal Nuno, Matt Tracy, and Shane Greene. Chien-Ming Wang is the staff ace as he tries to make it back with the team that gave him his first shot in the show, where he served as the parent club's ace of sorts for three seasons before suffering a fluke injury rounding third base in an interleague game.
Fast forward to Buster's first start, the Trenton Thunder were 3-1 in the opening series of the year against the Portland Seadogs. Adams took to the bump in the first game against the New Hampshire Fisher Cats, and didn't disappoint.
Throughout the entire start the Fisher Cats swung early in the count. Adams never dealt more than 13 pitches in an inning. He gave up six hits and no walks over eight innings while striking out seven on his way to blanking the Fisher Cats.
However, the Thunder were also silenced throughout the contest. Up until the seventh inning they amassed only two hits. All told, they struck out 12 times to six walks and scored the game's only two runs in the top of the tenth. Both starters pitched well enough to win, but neither got a decision.
Adams, at least on this night, has made Yankees fans notice he might be worth watching out for.

The New York Yankees hit lucky number seven after defeating the Seattle Mariners 9-0 Saturday night. However, that is not the only thing they were lucky with as castaway Bartolo Colon continues to solidify the back-end of the rotation. Mariner hitters were clueless all night as Colon pitched a complete game shutout giving up only three hits.
The night started out with one-two-three inning from Seattle's young righthander Michael Pineda. On the Mariner's side of the inning Ichiro blasted a shot to left-center field netting him a double, but Colon had other plans. He prompted an infield pop-up and two strikeouts in the inning.
"I felt good tonight," Colon said."My fastball was working on both sides of the plate. I was able to use my slider a little more than usual for strike to keep them off balance."
Pineda cruised through the second and third, however he ran into trouble in the fourth after Yankee first baseman homered to start the scoring and from there he added another two-run home run in the sixth. Brett Gardner collected three hits, Alex Rodriguez collected two hits including a home run in the ninth.
"It was great to see the guys hitting and scoring runs tonight," Yankees Manager Joe Girardi said. "We've been struggling as of late with getting guys on base and plating them, but I feel like we are heading in the right direction now."
The Yankees look to sweep their fourth straight series tomorrow night as Ivan Nova (7-2, 4.16) takes on David Pauley (3-3, 4.21) at Safeco Field tomorrow night.

With the Boston Red Sox and the Tampa Bay Rays both losing earlier in the day, the New York Yankees needed a win to help gain some ground in a tight AL East division. As luck would have it, they sent their ace CC Sabathia to the mound. However, the Toronto Blue Jays countered with Brett Cecil, the young southpaw who has given the Yankees fits over the past year due to his exceptional changeup.
Sabathia started off strong striking out two in the first three and cruised threw six. Along the way though, the Blue Jays drove his pitch count up by extending at-bats. He ended the game with seven strikeouts while allowing only seven baserunners.
"Their hitters did a great job making CC throw a lot of pitches during each at-bat," said Joe Girardi, Yankees manager. "I would have left him in there after the sixth, but he was just over 110 pitches at that point, so we decided to go to the bullpen."
The bullpen didn't disappoint. David Robertson, Rafael Soriano and Mariano Rivera kept the door closed on the Blue Jays hitters over three innings. Giving up only one hit and one walk.
"Coming into the season we thought the bullpen would be a strength of this team," said Robertson. "It seems each of us bring something different to the table, which is helping us win games."
Cecil, coming into the game losing his last three, pitched a marvelous game but couldn't get any runs from his offense.
"It's disappointing," he said. "We had a few opportunities, but that's how the game works sometimes. You just have to go back out there the next time and hope to give the team chances like this again."
His only blemish came from a fifth inning home run by Robinson Cano. Cecil said that the slider came out "flat" and "didn't bite" like in previous innings.
The Yankees are now eight games back of Boston and only two games back of Tampa Bay. New York are winners of their last five and hold a record of 8-2 over their last ten games. The Bombers have a day off and then start a weekend series with the Seattle Mariners that won't feature Felix Hernandez who's next scheduled start isn't until Monday.

A crushing loss to the crosstown rivals New York Mets in yesterday's game, made tonight's game a peculiar match for the New York Yankees. Needing a win from a struggling pitching staff, AJ Burnett threw a masterful game going six strong innings collecting seven strikeouts while only giving up one walk and two earned runs. It's the type of performance the Yankees needed from one of its top of the rotation guys.
"It was nice to have the bats going tonight," said Burnett. "It's always easier pitching with a lead."
Speaking of hitting, Alex Rodriguez who has been in a season-long slump might be showing signs of life after his three-hit performance. His ability to get on-base and drive runs home are crucial to the Yankees success while the pitching figures itself out.
"I saw the ball real well tonight," Rodriguez said. "I was great having the guys in front of me give me opportunities to hit them in."
Yankees Manager Joe Girardi gave Nick Swisher the night off and inserted Andruw Jones into the lineup, who had success at the plate after catapulting a ball into the LF seats to start off the eighth. In only 19 games, Jones has hit six home runs, giving the Bronx Bombers a viable option off the bench after former Yankee Marcus Thames left via free agency.
The Yanks face the Mets tomorrow in the rubber match of the three game series with Bartolo Colon (3-2) taking the hill against Mike Pelfrey (1-5).

The New York Yankees came into the season not knowing whether the back of their rotation would hold up. However, Freddy Garcia has been very good so far in pinstripes continuing to pitch well against the Baltimore Orioles. Over six innings he gave up only five hits and one earned run while striking out four.
The Yankees were stymied by Bret Bergensen all night and statistically outdueled Garcia by pitching 6.2 innings giving up only one run while striking out six. In a battle of the bullpens, New York employed the services of Joba, Logan, Ayala and Rivera to get the last 12 outs of the game.
"We are pleasantly surprised with Freddy," said Yankee Manager Joe Girardi. "Our bullpen did an excellent job tonight shutting down their offense."
Mild-mannered Brett Gardner was ejected from the game in the 4th after arguing a call at first. Replay showed he was, in fact, out. The play moved Martin over to second, who was later stranded in the inning.
"I was out of line," Gardner admitted. "Luckily, the boys pulled out a win because I feel like I let them down by letting my temper get the best of me."
The Yankees take the two-game series and will host the New York Mets in the Subway series over the weekend. CC Sabathia, who has struggled in the early going, will take the hill against Chris Capuano who is having issues of his own in the young season.

Through 44 games through the season the New York Yankees trail both the powerful Boston Red Sox and the crafty Tampa Bay Rays in the standings. Coming into the season, the pitching staff was a known concern for the Pinstripers. However, they couldn't have expected both CC Sabathia and Phil Hughes to struggle like they are. Because of his struggles, Hughes has landed on the DL, while Sabathia continues to try to find his stride. The bullpen has also been very shaky with Joba, Logan and Soriano each having an ERA up over four.
As for the the hitting, Derek Jeter and Alex Rodriguez have struggled mightily in the early going to the tune of .221 and .210 batting averages, respectively. However, Curtis Granderson, Russell Martin and Andruw Jones have picked up some of the slack. Even Cano is hitting a modest .257 right now.
