The Destruction of a Legacy?
Posted on February 8, 2010 at 12:53 PM.
Webster's Dictionary defines the word Legacy as:

"Law. a gift of property, esp. personal property, as money, by will; a bequest."

All I've heard the past few weeks is Colts quarterback Peyton Manning's legacy and how it would be tainted if he loses the Super Bowl. I have two questions about this: what and why?

Sure Tom Brady has three Super Bowl championships, Joe Montana has four, and Terry Bradshaw has four. These QBs will always be at the front of the discussion when it comes to great QBs.

Oh wait, Dan Marino went to one and lost, Jim Kelly went to four and lost all, Fran Tarkenton went to three and lost all, but you don't hear their "legacy" being damaged. They are still amongst the greatest QBs to ever play the game.

For god sakes, Trent Dilfer won a SB on the heels of a great Baltimore Ravens defense and would he be considered one of the best QBs to win the game? Jeff Hostetler won a Super Bowl with the Giants are we ready to anoint him one of the greatest ever?

A legacy to me is made over a range of games, not one or two games. Manning has been great for SO LONG and so what he lost a Super Bowl, many great QBs never get there.

They are who they are and leading a team to the Super Bowl is a great achievement, winning it is on a whole other level, but Peyton Manning is a great QB and will own many of the good QB records (not the INT record, right Favre?)

Speaking of Favre, why isn't there more uproar over his legacy? If I remember right he's 1-1 in Super Bowls and owns many of the more prestigious QB records. What bothers me is everyone goes bonkers over Favre and how great he is but they tend to forget he's 1-1 in the SB and has led his team to a few NFC playoff games and LOST, oh yeah one was on a pick six AT HOME. How is his legacy doing? *crickets*

Manning's legacy isn't hurt, sure he threw a SB pick that ultimately put the game out of reach but the guy is still going to own all the prestigious QB records. Since when did MULTIPLE SBs guarantee his place in history? I've always read the unwritten rule as winning one and playing a great level for a long time will get you in to the Hall.

Don't worry Manning you'll be all right kid. Your legacy is fine and you will be mentioned with the greatest ever to play the position. The media is dumb and the people who don't question the media are even worse. Skip Bayless and other naysayers need to calm down and stop trying to be the devil's advocate just to be provocative. You're making the news NOT reporting it, cardinal sin of journalism...

PS- The best commercial is the Doritos commercial of the kid who slaps the guy in the face and gave him some "house rules". I laughed so hard!!
