Comeback Falls Short for American League
Posted on June 15, 2013 at 07:51 PM.
Not having a DH may have hurt the American League this evening. They were edged by the National League in the 2013 All-Star Game. American League manager Jim Leyland had some harsh words for the losing pitcher, his former player Jair Jurrjens: "Well, we traded him [to Tampa] for a reason. It doesn't surprise me that he screwed this up for us. Now, what if my Tigers make it back to the World Series. In Games 1 and 2, I'll have to remember this fiasco." Despite being undefeated since leaving the Braves, Jurrjens had the highest ERA of all of the All-Stars.

Jurrjens declined to respond to Leyland; however, these are some talking points to remember when the Tigers head down to the Trop for a four-game series later this season.

Leyland had some softer words for his own starter, Johnny Cueto, who relieved Brandon League, but gave up three earned runs in the 6th: "He faced a tough part of the lineup. These were guys who probably had his number when he was in the NL. I tried playing the numbers; [Cueto] is lethal against lefties."

The Tigers manager also liked Kyle Farnsworth, who has pitched for Leyland on two separate occassions. When commenting on Farnsworth, Leyland claims that he'll be getting the attention of GM Dave Dombrowski before July 31st.

Surprisingly, there was not much to be said on the other side by outspoken NL Manager Ozzie Guillen. Despite winning the NL Pennant last season, Guillen didn't feel as personally connected to the game as Leyland: "I'm not going to say that this game means as much to me, because I don't want to promise that I'm making it back to the World Series. Leyland and his guys swept us! That should say something." Guillen, however, did thank his All-Stars for "holding on". The AL scored 3 runs late to fall short of the comeback.
