Doug Fister gave up only one run on three hits, while striking out 10 in an 8 1/3 inning pitching gem. Jerry Sands went 3-4 with a double and a run scored. Mark Trumbo was also 3-4, doubling, tripling, driving in two, and scoring twice.

Justin Verlander showed up Stephen Strasburg by two-hitting the Nationals. Brian McCann went 2-4 and drove in two. JJ Hardy hit a 3-run inside-the-park home run.

Matt Cain struck out 10 and only gave up two hits over seven innings, while Max Scherzer was shelled in his return to the Motor City. Brian McCann brought his batting average above .300 with three hits, including a triple and home run. He drove in two.
