Game 42 @ OAK

Ever have a game where you felt every emotion known to man? Tonight's certainly did just that for the Tigers.

There was a sense of trouble from the outset. Cole Hamels' first batter, Jemile Weeks, saw 12 pitches. To continue, he reached on an error. This first inning saw a double, then another error. When the dust cleared, it was 2-0 A's. Cole Hamels had already thrown 33 pitches.

The Tigers went 1-2-3 in the 2nd, after notching only a single off Brett Anderson in the 1st. Kurt Suzuki homered to lead off the second. And, the game went quiet after that...

There were 3 total hits from innings 3 through 6. But, there was a little hope in the top of the 7th. David Freese singled, then Adam Jones doubled to follow. But, Freese was thrown out at home to end the inning.

The outlook was bleak. The Tigers had squandered their only scoring opportunity of the game, but in the 8th, the Tigers re-learned that Brett Anderson wasn't invincible.

Over the course of three at-bats, the game re-tied itself. Jerry Sands homered; Wellington Castillo singled; and Ryan Braun homered to tie.

We saw no meaningful offense until the bottom of the 10th. Scott Sizemore singled and advanced on a bunt. Following an IBB to Brandon Allen, the pinch-running Thomas Francona was picked off at 2nd. Cliff Pennington flew out to end the threat.

Brett Anderson found himself out of the game after recording two outs in the 11th. His replacement, Brad Peacock surrendered what looked like a go-ahead and potential game-winning home run to Wellington Castillo. But, the bottom of the 15th came.

Thomas Francona redeemed himself, launching a bomb to right-center off of new Tigers closer Craig Kimbrel.

Thankfully, for the Tigers, the wheels of the Athletics' bullpen fell off in the 16th. There were six consecutive hits, including a home run. The last scoring play of the game, an RBI double, left the final score at 10-4.

Jordan Walden, the last reliever left in the Tigers' bullpen, closed the game in the 16th.
