The Tigers acquired prospect Brandon Guyer for Brandon Moss and another prospect. After failing to survive the cut down to the 25-man roster, Guyer was named the AAA RF starter.
The Tigers re-acquired Jon Lester (in addition to prospects) for Anibal Sanchez and Carlos Villanueva. Despite a win, Sanchez had serious control issues in his last start. Lester was originally forced to leave the Tigers due to financial troubles following their World Series win over the Marlins.
Budget Troubles
Preliminary reports show that the Cubs, Diamondbacks, Nationals, Pirates, Rangers, Reds, and Tigers are projected to outspend their budgets.
Rumors
2013 is a contract year for both Ian Kinsler and Hunter Pence. Because management doubts that they can afford pay raises to both, Detroit is prioritizing Pence and shopping Kinsler. A move will likely not come until the Trading Deadline, because the Tigers want to reap all possible benefits of Kinsler's production. Reportedly, there is a deal in place with the Indians, who would give up Jason Kipnis and prospects. That deal would give the Tigers money to negotiate a contract extension with Pence.
2013 is also a contract year for Lance Berkman. The Tigers aren't actively shopping him, because he fits the platoon role well. They expect Berkman to retire at the end of this season. Because of Berkman's age, he will not recieve a contract extension even though a paycut would make sense for both sides.
