Tigers Offseason Trades

The Tigers trade Edwin Encarnacion, Matt Guerrier, and Damon Johnson to the Cardinals for Michael Morse and Eduardo Sanchez.

Encarnacion tripled his salary over the past year, and with our commitment to getting under budget, we had to trade him. Encarnacion didn't perform fully as expected. If you remember, Morse spent the 1st half of the season with the Tigers. He produced well with a +.300 AVG and more than 20 HR. Guerrier is coming to the end of his career, and Sanchez is an up-and-comer that has proven himself in the NL.

The Tigers trade Jon Lester, Brian Fuentes, and Pedro Valdez to the Reds for Johnny Cueto, Nick Masset, and Larry Burton.

Before Lester's hot streak at the end of the year, he was troublesome. We worried about his command, and he had been rocked on occasion. The organization has decided to stay away from lefty starters forever. Cueto has become more of a lefty-killer than before. Fuentes was set to make $5 million. He didn't perform that well, until the postseason. Masset is expected to blossom later, but he has a relatively high OVR for our bullpen.

The Tigers trade Ryan Doumit and Matt Daley to the Cubs for Wellington Castillo and Claude McCarthy.

Doumit was originally signed to back up Geovany Soto, but Castillo is younger, cheaper, and better defensively. He doesn't hit for contact as well as Doumit, but he will make up for it with power.

The Tigers trade Paul Konerko, Geovany Soto, and Jason Bulger to the Rangers for Mike Napoli, Dave Graham, and Blaine Ford.

Konerko was entering the final year of his contract. His age worries us about his future, and his OVR has already fallen from the past season. Napoli is known for power. He will also share catching duties with Castillo.

The Tigers trade Josh Beckett, Luke French, and Harry Fernandez to the Rockies for Jhoulys Chacin, Rickie Gaub, and Casey Parker.

Beckett was getting expensive, and Chacin has promising potential. He can start now, but he will likely be a 4th or 5th guy. We aren't worried about the rotation, so we took the deal and hope things will turn out as expected.

As a result, for the 1st time in 2 seasons, the Tigers are under budget. That was our goal, and we will hopefully stick to it. Our top 10 salaries* account for 85% of the team's MLB payroll. As a result, we have more than half of the team accounting for only 15%!
