Clutch Offense Proves Essential in Tigers' Victory

Game 30 @ SEA

The pitching matchup was spectacular. Justin Verlander (ND) started in place of Jordan Zimmermann in order to match up with Felix Hernandez (L). There was no scoring until the 5th. Both aces had no trouble in retiring hitters.

JJ Hardy broke out of a severe slump (batting .198) and homered. For the Mariners, Ichiro was the key guy for the Mariners, going 2-5 with 2 runs and an RBI triple.

Justin Smoak's 9th inning homer wasn't enough to call it a comeback; Jose Valverde got the save.

Andre Ethier's 9th inning, 2 run shot, gave the Tigers what eventually became game-winning runs.

The Tigers escaped with a victory. Although never trailing, they came awful close in both the 8th and 9th.
