Start of a new Era: Coach West Finds a Job
Posted on August 20, 2012 at 02:30 AM.
Memphis, TN - As Coach Justin Fuente was putting the finishing touches on the beginning of his first season as head football coach at the University of Memphis, tragedy struck as one of Memphis' Offensive Coordinator's was forced to retire after learning that he had cancer. "It was a tough decision, this is one obstacle that my family and I will need to work hard with each other if I am going to overcome. I wish the university, the fans, the coaches, and most of all, the players the best of luck in the coming year, and the years to follow. I believe in this program, and know in my heart that this staff, along with the support of the city of Memphis can help bring Tiger football out of the gutter, and become champions." Coach Fuente needed to find a man who could help him do what he believed was necessary in order to make Memphis football "matter again." Many believe he did that with his latest signing, Ryan West.

West grew up in Salt Lake City, Utah and played football for East High School in Salt Lake. As a halfback he helped lead EHS to the state playoffs his Junior and Senior season, receiving All-State honors both years. After high school, West decided to sign his letter of intent with the University of Colorado, although West never got to start at Colorado his first three years, he was a vital part in many games including a three touchdown game his Sophomore year against Baylor. Many believed that West would be a dominate force in his Senior season at Colorado, but unfortunately was injured in the Spring Game, tearing his ACL. Although he was given an extra year of eligibility from the NCAA, West decided to leave Colorado after he got his degree, explaining that he understood his playing days were over, and would try and coach. He coached High School Football at East High School as an assistant coach, and moved to Fort Worth, TX to coach at Cassata High School. He helped move five of his players to FBS College Football in his two years as a coach at Cassata, including three to TCU, where until recently, Coach Fuente was the Offensive Coordinator.

When asked about the opportunity to become the next offensive coordinator at Memphis, Coach West replied "I am grateful for the opportunity. I want to help bring Memphis Football to the high level it should be. We have such a unique opportunity at Memphis, and I plan to help make this team great." For now, Coach West has a one year contract, including some goals that the AD believe are important to turning around the program. Coach West has also become the new head of recruiting at Memphis. "I plan on getting players who will work hard, help the team, and most of all, want to win." It sounds like Memphis Football is heating up. Fans can't wait until opening day, September 1st, when Memphis takes on Tennessee-Martin.

Sept. 1st 2012 Memphis vs TN-Martin

The First game of a season can be an implication of how the rest of the season will go, if that is the case, the Memphis Tigers football team looks to be in top shape. Playing TN-Martin in their season opener earlier today, Memphis looked exactly how new coach Justin Fuente hoped. On the first play from scrimmage, Junior Jerrell Rhodes took an inside handoff to the house on a 75 yard scoring run. The Tiger offense looked in control for the majority of the game, and Memphis finished with 180 passing yards and 372 rushing yards for a total of 552 yards of offense. A large majority of the rushes came from Rhodes, who finished the game with three touchdowns and 283 yards on the ground, breaking the Memphis single game record. "I owe a lot of it to Coach (Ryan) West, he has helped me so much since he has been here, fine tuning my game, and the system we run, his offense, it works so well for me." Quarterback Jacob Karam went 13 for 26 giving up no interceptions, but throwing no touchdowns. Carl Harris (Rhodes' backup) got 42 yards and two touchdowns in Memphis' 34-3 win over TN-Martin. This game puts Memphis at 1-0 for the season. Other big news from around the NCAA: Boise State lost to Michigan State 27-21, Nevada beat Cal 21-17, Alabama defeated Michigan 41-21, and the biggest upset came from Eugene Oregon, where an upstart Arkansas State Red Wolves team defeated Oregon 38-31. "Our team as a whole did it all, I think all four of our halfbacks scored today" said head coach Gus Malzahn. Memphis plays Arkansas State in Jonesboro on September 8th

The new Top-25 came out today, and after beating Oregon on opening weekend in Autzen Stadium, Arkansas State is now ranked 19th in the country. "We don't let rankings and talk get to us, we just play our game. If we show up, they are going to need to show up to play us. It doesn't matter if they are number 1 in the country, or coming off a losing season in D-3 We play our hearts out each and every game"
-Ryan West (Memphis OC)

Sept. 8th 2012 Memphis at Arkansas State

Week two of the season had Memphis travel to Jonesborro, AR to play the Arkansas State Red Wolves. Ark State had just come off an upset win over Oregon and were ranked 19th before the game against Memphis. Ark State started strong, scoring a Ryan Aplin passing touchdown 4 minutes into the game. Memphis battled back, outscoring the Red Wolves 28 to 10 for the last three quarters and won 28-17. Jacob Karam had a great game going 16-25 and getting three TDs with no interceptions. Jerrell Rhodes ran for 162 yards and helped the Tigers get over 400 yards of offense. "We outplayed them in almost every way. Out ran, out passed, better percentages on third down. We had that fumble, but in the end, the score showed who was the better team." -Ryan West.

Other NCAA news UCF defeated Ohio State 24 to 17 off a Bortles Touchdown pass with 52 seconds left in the game. Rice beat Kansas 37-31 in overtime. UC Davis beat SJSU 41-31. And Oregon continued to have a bad start to their season, losing again, this time to Fresno State "We need to get back to basics. We can't win just playing fancy. I think our kids needed this, I just wish that these lessons could have been learned in the summer rather than now" -Chip Kelly.

After Beating Arkansas State in Jonesborro, Memphis Offensive Coordinator went on the road to do some scouting and recruiting. "I don't have any more names other than the ones I game you earlier in the year, but lets just say that I am working on some really good guys, we should be a strong team in the next couple of years if and when we get these guys to sign letters of intent to Memphis" -Ryan West. West is looking for players in Tennessee and the surrounding states explaining "Right now Memphis football isn't a national name, if we can't convince guys from around here to play for us, how can I convince guys from California or Florida to come here?"

September 15, 2012 Memphis vs MTSU

Memphis came into this game with a 2-0 record with wins over TN-Martin, and Arkansas State, they were feeling good, and believed that this year might be the start of something good in Memphis football. The Tigers hit a road bump today against MTSU losing 38-27. "They beat us with their defense today. We made stupid plays and they capitalized on them." said Coach Fuente, MTSU had two defensive touchdowns including a 39 yard fumble return, and a 55 yard pick six in the fourth quarter that all but sealed the game. Despite throwing 17-30 and 324 yards, Jacob Karam threw only one touchdown pass and ended up with three interceptions and six sacks on the day. After getting injured during the game, Jerrell Rhodes finished the game with a TD and 105 yards, no news if he will play in next week's game at Duke. MTSU's quarterback, Logan Kilgore, completed 20-38 passes for 293 yards and 3 touchdowns. "We are so proud of Logan after this game. We put our faith in him today, and he showed us that it was worth it." Rick Stockstill, MTSU's head coach said. Memphis needs to regroup and get its game back if they want to play well next week against Duke.

September 22, 2012 Memphis at Duke

Memphis traveled to Durham, NC to face off against Duke University. It was a chance for Memphis to right the wrong of last week's loss to MTSU, instead, Memphis looked beaten, and lost to the Blue Devils 38-7. "We didn't start off well, they scored almost all their points in the first half, and by the we could get the guys back in it, it was too late. We need to play a full game, not just half" said Head Coach Justin Fuente. Memphis just couldn't get the offense started against duke, getting only 168 yards of offense compared to Duke's 451. The lone good news was from backup quarterback Will Gilchrist who despite only throwing one pass, completed it for Memphis' only touchdown. Memphis has a bye week, and will look to regroup to face Rice University in two weeks.

Other NCAA News came from WVU beating Maryland 31-28, Oklahoma beating Kansas State 42-28, and FIU defeating Louisville 20-17

Memphis had a bye week this week and worked on their gameplan for next week's matchup against Rice. Coach West explained that "We need to regroup after the last two weeks. We started off strong, but these last losses put us back at .500 and That is somewhere I know we can e better than."

In the NCAA this week, Pac-12 favorite, Stanford was upset by Washington 35-19. Both those teams are at 3-1 for the season. A team nobody thought would do much this year, Indiana (4-0) won their first conference game this week beating Northwestern 21-19. Georgia (5-0) beat Tennessee (4-1) 31-21 and looks to be the SEC East favorite. Oregon (2-3) looks to be having the worst season possible, as the Ducks come off a 26-17 loss to Washington State (4-1) look for the Apple Cup game between the two Washington schools to be a big factor in deciding the Pac-12 this year. Ohio State (4-1) and Michigan State (4-1) went down to the wire, and in the end, the Buckeyes ended up with a victory, 24-23.

Memphis takes on Rice later this week, and some recruits are coming to the game to take their Official Visits to Memphis. 4* HB Luke Mueller from Selmont, AL stated that "Memphis is a top choice for me.
