A busy start to the new year for the Anaheim Ducks.

January 1, 2013

Waived RW - Brad Staubitz, Claimed by Toronto.

Analysis: Staubitz just simply didn't do much in limited time with the NHL club, through 13 games he was pointless, had 12 penalty minutes, and was a plus-2.

January 4, 2013

Signed LW - Cody McLeod to a 1 year contract, worth $1.080m. He will play 3/4 checking LW role.

January 10, 2013

Traded LW - Kyle Clifford, and D - Scott Valentine to Nashville in exchange for RW - Martin Erat and a 4th, 2013 (NSH).

Analysis: A quick flip of Clifford, enabled the Ducks to get a legitimate top 6 NHL Winger. The departure of Vanek was felt a bit harder than expected, and a serious lack of scoring depth on the wings was evident. Clifford had 1 goal, 3 assists and was a minus-1 through 13 games with the Ducks. He struggled to gain ice time with poor work ethic, while competing for ice time with Matt Beleskey, Matt Calvert, and Tristan Scherwey.

Through 44 games this season, Erat has 9 goals, 13 assists and a minus-3 rating. His value may be down, but through the last two seasons Erat has not missed a game, has 44 goals, 71 assists and has a plus-16 rating. Look for a quick bounce back as he will be playing along a much more skilled set of center-icemen than he was in Nashville. He is signed for two more seasons after this and carries a cap hit of $4.500m.
